The following morning, I woke up before Catra did, so I gently moved out from under her and walked down the hall to find that Mermista was here. She had been talking to Glimmer. As I approached the two of them, Mermista turned to me.
"Oh, hey Adora," she said.
"Hey Mermista," I replied.
"I'm here too!" Glimmer said enthusiastically.
I just gave her a look that communicated 'I need to talk to you later'. I wasn't quite sure if Glimmer had registered that, but something seemed to flicker in her eyes momentarily, so I guessed that she had.
The sun was continuing to rise in the sky, but it was only early in the day, which made me wonder why Mermista was here.
"I'm here because I heard this weird noise last night. I thought it was just Seahawk at first...then I thought that it might have been Horde Prime but I mean...we got the last of the clones, right?" Mermista asked.
"Right, Mista," Glimmer said.
"Right? That's what I thought," Mermista said, "But then I heard this weird noise last night, hence why I'm here now," she explained.
Glimmer flashed her a charming smile.
"And we're really glad to have you here, Mermista," she said.
As Glimmer began to direct Mermista to the main dining hall, she turned to me.
"Is everything okay with you?" she asked me sensitively.
"Did you tell Catra anything?" I asked her.
"Only minor details...not much," Glimmer said.
I just nodded. I wasn't about to get mad at Glimmer over telling Catra the truth. I just didn't want Catra to get mixed up in my problems again.
"Unless you didn't want me to tell her anything...in which case, I'm really sorry, Adora," she told me.
I gave a slight shake of my head.
"I could never be mad at you," I said.
Glimmer simply smiled then and released a gentle breath.
We soon arrived in the main dining hall and went to sit with Mermista.
"So, what do we think those huge bangs came from? Any ideas?" Mermista asked.
"I'm not entirely sure, but I'm thinking maybe a giant robot; a meteor hit us and we were entirely unaware of it or we all coincidentally had the same sound hallucination. I mean...the ordeal with Horde Prime was kind of traumatising. It wouldn't be surprising if our minds started making up scenarios," Glimmer said, as her eyes flashed with wonder and curiosity.
"Alright, let's go to someone a little less eccentric," Mermista stated, as her eyes moved to me.
Glimmer frowned slightly, while I simply pointed to myself.
"Are you talking about me?" I asked.
"You won the battle, Adora. Who else would I consult for guidance?" Mermista asked.
She did have a good point, though while I had won one battle with Horde Prime, I still felt as though there was a lot that I wasn't prepared for. I didn't feel as though I had been born to be this soldier that everyone had been trying to make me be. I guessed that I had been having slips in my self-esteem after the battle was over. It felt like everyone expected so much from me and I wanted desperately to live up to those expectations, which made me think, for a second, that maybe Catra was right. Maybe I really did care about other people more than myself.
"Earth to Adora?" Mermista asked, as she ran a hand through her blue hair.
I looked towards her then and sighed.
"Sorry...I guess I'm just a little preoccupied at the moment," I said.
"And that's okay!" Glimmer said.
"Yeah. We're not expecting the world from you, Adora. We just need to get some answers, I suppose. I've never heard anything like that in all of my years of living in Etheria," Mermista stated, "But we can figure this out!" she said, "Let's get going."
"Maybe after I've had my breakfast," Glimmer said.
"Alright," Mermista said, as her belly rumbled, "You know...I think I'm going to get myself some food, too," she said.
Mermista began to creatively pile fruit on top of her pancake platter and soon rejoined Glimmer and I.
"I just want to know that Etheria is safe...you know? I don't want to be so scared anymore," I managed to say.
"You're not alone, Adora! We're here for you," Glimmer said and then elbowed Mermista slightly, "Right, Mista?" she asked her.
Mermista's eyes widened slightly, then, and she quickly finished off her pancake bite before replying.
"Oh right, totally. We're here for you, Adora," she told me as her warm brown eyes met my own. "I think it's only practical that we investigate this whole weird noise situation, though. If we leave it for too long then...we may end up with a bigger problem on our hands," Mermista warned.
Glimmer's eyes flashed with curiosity, as she scanned Mermista's face, then. After a beat of time, she gave a nod of agreement.
"Adora...you've hardly touched your food! Is everything okay?" Glimmer asked me.
"I'm just not that hungry," I said.
"Oh," Glimmer said, as her eyebrows creased together slightly. She sighed and then got a piece of paper and a pencil.
"What's that for?" I asked her.
"I'm going to mind map a plan for us and we're not leaving this table until you eat your pancakes!" Glimmer stated.
I gave a slight chuckle at that. I had to respect my friend for looking out for me so well. I managed to take a bite of my pancake and eventually finished off the plate, just as Glimmer finished off her mind map.
"Evil killer robots?" Mermista asked, as her eyes glanced over it.
"Hey! It could happen!" Glimmer said.
"I don't doubt that but...it doesn't make much sense, does it? I mean...who do we know that makes robots?" Mermista asked.
Glimmer and I just shrugged.
We looked towards Mermista for a moment, until she simply shrugged too.
"Right, me neither. I've got nothing," she said.
It seemed that we were going to have to move onto plan B. The only problem was that we didn't even have a plan B yet.
