Trigger warning: mentions and/or contains death
JENNIE'S POV
I went home after our talk and as soon as I entered my room, my phone started ringing. I pulled it out and an unknown number flashed on the screen. I answered it out of curiosity.
"Good afternoon. Is this Ms. Jennie Kim?" a man with an unfamiliar voice inquired.
"This is she. May I ask who's calling?" I asked as I sat at the edge of my bed.
"Hello, Ms. Kim. This is Seung Hyunjae from the Samsorn Saeli Foundation. Our goal as an organization is to give financial assistance to those who need medical procedures for life threatening diseases and conditions but are unable to afford them," the man said on the other line.
I tried to recall if I knew him or if the foundation's name sounded familiar, but to no avail. Though, their goal as an organization sparked my interest.
I kept quiet and let him continue, "I got your number from an organization you usually volunteer in and we were wondering if you'd be willing to help us out. We will have a fundraising event on the 27th and we are currently in need of volunteers to help us with making sure the event will be a success."
"Please give me a moment. I'll just check my calendar." I put the call on hold and checked if I was free.
"I'm back, Mr. Seung. I'm able to lend a hand on that day."
"That's great, Ms. Kim. I'll send you the details and I'll see you there. Thank you in advance for your help."
I dropped the call and not long after, the details were sent via text. Receiving such a call didn't surprise me.This wasn't the first time someone reached out to me for volunteer work, since I've been actively volunteering for years. Their cause was important so I didn't hesitate to accept.

A few days later, I was at the fundraiser event, helping set up the venue. The event would start in a few hours and all the volunteers and the people handling the event were busy with the preparations.
The foundation was fairly new and there wasn't much information about them on the internet. From what I gathered, they'd already helped quite a few patients with their medical bills, but finding more investors would mean that they could accept more applicants.
Mr. Seung said that the founder wanted to hold the fundraising on her birthday because this foundation was close to her heart. He said that though they didn't see her much, she was very hands on with everything and all major decisions were still made by her.
The event was in full swing and I was busy coordinating with the caterer when the emcee called everyone's attention for the founder's speech. I looked over to the stage and my jaw dropped.
Lisa was there, looking regal in a charcoal tailored power suit as she took the stage.
"Good evening, everyone. I am Lisa Manoban, the founder of the Samsorn Saeli Foundation. I am very grateful for your attendance today." Her eyes scanned the audience as best she could, before continuing, "This foundation was established in honor of my late best friend, Sam."
My eyebrows shot upwards in surprise. Her best friend died? And she's been going through it alone? There was a sudden pang in my chest with the thought of how much it must have hurt to lose someone so close to her. The pain must be unimaginable.
"Sam was an inspiration to those who knew her. She was a kind soul who was taken from this world early." Lisa smiled sadly, her grip on the microphone tightening. "If she were here, she would have undoubtedly been proud of being part of a cause that would help a lot of people. I'm happy to announce that tonight, we have raised enough money for the next batch of patients." She paused for a moment as the crowd applauded for the achievement.
