JENNIE'S POV
"A year ago from today, Samorn Saeli was taken from this world prematurely."
All eyes in the convention hall were on Lisa as she stood on stage. There was silence as her manner of speaking demanded our attention; she spoke with such care and confidence.
"She was everything we needed in this world. Her kindness and wisdom has helped more people than I can count. When she passed, I vowed to make sure her legacy continues. Today, through this blood drive, we will save countless lives.
"I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to you all for continuing to support the Samorn Saeli Foundation. Thank you for being here and helping out those who need it, may it be by your time, your blood, or your resources. Just by looking at how many of you are here, I know we've already made a difference."
The crowd gave a round of applause as Lisa finished her opening remarks.
Jisoo, Chaeyoung, and I volunteered to help out with the preparations and to donate as well because we knew how much this meant to Lisa. When she shared with us what she had planned for Samorn's death anniversary, we knew we wanted to be there for her.
Lisa joined us in line as we waited for our turn to donate. Not long after, one by one, we started getting checked for the necessary information before we could proceed. Jisoo, Chaeyoung, and Lisa checked out and my turn was up.
The duo was the first to go through the blood extraction at the other part of the hall, leaving me with Lisa. The nurse asked me if it would be okay for Lisa to stay and I nodded in agreement. She asked for my blood type and medical history and I told them all I knew.
"Ms. Kim, can you roll up your sleeve? We'll just be taking your blood pressure first to check if you're fit to donate today," the nurse instructed. I did as she said and put my arm on the table. The nurse put on her stethoscope and secured the cuff of the sphygmomanometer. She placed the other end of the stethoscope on the edge of the cuff and started pumping on the bulb. After a moment of silence as the nurse took note of the reading, she spoke.
"Ms. Kim, your blood pressure is a bit elevated. I'm sorry but as per regulation, you can't donate today."
"Oh." A wave of disappointment surged through me. I was hoping to support Lisa by extending help as much as possible but when I looked at her, a hint of worry flashed on her face.
I turned my attention back to the nurse. "Is it serious? Do I need to be worried?"
"The levels are not at an alarming rate but of course it's still best to get checked. This might not mean you have high blood pressure yet it's best to talk to a specialist to prevent it from happening."
I thanked her and we vacated the area. We were walking towards the donation area for Lisa's turn when she suddenly grabbed my arm.
"Hey, do you want me to come with you to the doctor's office?" she offered in concern.
"No, it's fine. I can go on my own. Let's not think about it too much. The nurse said that it's a preventive measure anyway. I'm sorry I couldn't donate, though," I answered apologetically.
"Okay, let me know what the doctor says, yeah?" she said with her eyebrows knitted together. I placed my hand on her cheek in reassurance and she smiled gently at me before continuing, "And I'm glad you're here with me regardless."
Soon after, the three of them were through with their blood donations. I waited for them to rest for a while before we all went on our ways. Before I separated with Lisa, I invited her for dinner on the coming Sunday, which will mark our 100th day as a couple. I tried to contain my excitement because she wasn't aware of how important that day was for me.
