The frigid northern air nipped and nagged at the young girls face as she trudged behind her older brother through the frosty mountains of the northern water tribe. The strong April winds whipping around her, causing her long black hair, which resided in two french braids, to flutter around her face. Every few steps a larger gust of wind would hit her, yanking down her hood like a school bully. After a while she gave up her attempts to keep it up and allowed the wind to kiss her face, and her ears and cheeks to get rosy in the cold. The cold didn't bother her too much though, she was a waterbender, being in an icy tundra was in her blood, but the baby blue parka she wore aided her anyways.
"Come on y/n, just a little further" Her brother Kenji called from a few feet ahead.
Y/n adored her brother, he was 13, a full 6 years older than her, and more of a father to her than her own. Unlike most of the men in the tribe, Kenji disagreed with the sexist traditions of the North. Unlike their parents, or her other brother, Kylo, Kenji thought that woman deserved to bend just as much as the men, which is why he was dragging the young girl out into the mountains.
"Here we are."
Y/n looked at the landscape around her, she hadn't payed much attention to where they had been walking, instead focusing on not falling over in the rough terrain. They were on a plateau atop one of the mountains looking over the capital of the Northern Water Tribe. Small plumes of smoke rose out of chimneys of each building, and small flickers of firelight could be seen cascading through the city. The glistening ocean rocked gently behind the city walls, large glaciers bobbing around in the large mass of water. Y/n had never been out here.
It was beautiful."Wow.." She gasped
Kenji turned her to face him and knelt down to her eye level, his right hand resting on her shoulder.
"I am going to teach you something today. You can never tell anyone. Not mom, not dad, not chief Arnook. No one."
"What about Yue?" She responded quietly.
Yue was her best friend, they grew up together, and spent almost every moment of every day together. Of course they would be, Y/n's father worked close to the chief, he was left chairmen on the Northern Council, the chief's right hand man. The 8 year old Yue was practically family."Only if she can keep a secret" Kenji grinned.
Y/n's eyes widened in anticipation.
"I am going to teach you to waterbend."

"YUE!! YUE!!" y/n called as they re-entered the city.
Yue spotted her friend and her polished, poised, princess face immediately twisted into a large grin."Yue! Guess what!" Y/n whispered into her ear mischievously.
"What" Yue gasped.
"Can you keep a seeecret?"
"Yes! tell me" The anticipation was getting to the 8 year old, and she was quite literally shaking from excitement.
Y/n giggled.
"Kenji taught me to waterbend!" Y/n whispered quickly into her friends ear.
"Woah."
Y/n was beaming.
"Y/n that's not allowed!" Yue's face quickly fell into darkness. Her eyes wide and her mouth curved ever so slightly downwards.
"Are you gonna tattle?" Y/n's voice quivered.
"I would never!" Yue squealed, obviously offended. "I'm just warning you, your father would be soooo mad."
"Well thats why it's a secret" Y/n winked
