It was the sudden rush of pain that startled Betty awake, the aching feeling of cramps growing throughout her entire being. The blonde hadn't even realised she was lying in a pool of dampness, her waters had broken during the night. Lying beside her, Veronica slept soundly, unaware of the torturous pain coursing through her girlfriends body. Typical. The brunette could sleep through anything. Betty clutched her stomach as another contraction shot through her body, a heavy groan leaving her lips.
"Babe."
No response. Veronica's muffled snores continued to bounce off the walls of their master bedroom. The girl sighed as she eased herself off of the bed, the action finally causing the petite woman beside her to stir.
"B," A hoarse voice filled with sleep grumbled, "Is everything okay?"
Betty sat at the edge of the bed, taking a moment to keep her nerves calm. It seemed as though the seconds slowed as she waited patiently for the pain to subside. Betty took in a few breaths, her hand absently stroking her stomach, praying Noah would hold on for a little longer. There was no way she was having the baby in their home, Veronica had no idea how to deliver a baby.
"The baby's coming."
Her words stripped the sleep from Veronica's body. The brunette's feet connect with the plush grey carpet on their bedroom floor, the woman rushing to throw on her nightgown. Veronica didn't care for selecting an outfit, hurrying to her girlfriend to slip her arm around her shoulders, gently raising the woman to her feet. Betty couldn't help but smile at the sudden paleness of Veronica's usually tanned face.
"It'll be okay." Betty attempted to reassure her girlfriend, simply earning a light laugh from Veronica.
"I should be the one telling you that," Was all she said as they made their way downstairs, Betty slipping on a pair of her trainers that were slightly too big. "Does it hurt? I don't know why I asked that, of course it does."
"It's bearable, it'll be over soon."
Veronica ushered Betty towards their car, ensuring she got herself into the passenger seat carefully. Blue eyes watched as Veronica moved as swiftly as she could to lock up the house, knowing it was best they didn't leave it open for wandering strangers. As much as the thought of pushing a child out of her body scared her, she could see it terrified Veronica more. The girl had babbled for months about how daunting it was, to have to watch her screaming in pain and be incapable to help.
The car purred to life as the brunette twisted the key in the ignition, glancing at the time her eyebrow cocked - five past four in the morning - of course the baby was an early riser, just like his mother. The passing thought earning a smile. It didn't take long to arrive at the hospital, Betty fighting the contractions that racked her body. A nurse was quickly scurrying towards them, placing a hand on Betty's lower back, leading her to a wheelchair knowing she shouldn't be on her feet.
Veronica's heart raced a million miles an hour, soon enough the pair were officially going to be mothers to a beautiful baby boy. The sound of Betty's straggled cry broke the brunette from her thoughts, eyes falling on Betty as sweat clung to her forehead. She'd only ever seen Betty look this sweaty and pale when she was sick, worry flooded Veronica's mind. But still, through all the pain the blonde managed a weak smile towards her girlfriend.
It took less than fifteen minutes for Betty's midwife to come stumbling into the delivery room. Just on time, as always. The poor woman looked as though she'd ran here, her bed hair sticking out left, right and centre. Her face make-up free. Veronica realised she too, most likely looked the same. The brown eyed girl's gaze fell onto her girlfriend, Betty's eyes squeezed shut as she held the nozzle from the gas and air to her lips. There was nothing she'd found more brutal than giving birth. The overwhelming pain seemed to be all she could think about.
