the truth

I took a deep breath as I placed my hand on the door knob and slowly opened the door.

" Brooke!" My mom ran into my arms as I barely opened the door. " Thank goodness you're okay!" She gasped hugging me tightly and placing her hand on my head.

" Of course I am, what- what's going on?"

" Meemaw told me you ran out so I got worried and tried to find you... come on in I --" she said as she was interrupted by a voice.

" Denise, is this fresh?" A man said coming outside with a bag of apples as Ava slowly came down the stairs. " Oh, I didn't know we had guests"

" Todd, this is Brooke, my other daughter."

I gulped and exchanged looks with Ava as she gave me the most innocent look with tears in her eyes.

" Oh hey, I've heard a lot about you, nice to meet you" He said as I fake smiled.

Wow, this was gonna be hard.

I looked at Ava and that second right then, I knew what this was about, why she called me here. Now it all made sense.

She was worried.

Without saying a word, Ava came closer to me and held my hand and quickly we went up the stairs.

" I'm so sorry Brooke" she said hugging me crying a little. " I just don't wanna loose anymore people first Chad, then you and daddy, all my friends and now mom. I am all alone now."

" Hey, look at me " I sniffled. " It's okay, it's okay" I said hugging her tightly. " Everything's going to be fine, I'm right here. Don't worry " I said rubbing her back.

Of course she felt that way. Like everything and everyone is just slipping away.

" So, uh what happened with dad?"

" Nothing, he's good now... I don't know honestly, I am tired of all of this but it'll be fine, I promise. " I said smiling at her.

" No Brooke, how do you know? Everyone's just leaving us. Now it's mom and whoever that guy is."

" Hey,  I don't care who that guy is, I don't know what he is but always remember, nothing's going to happen to the family we have. I promise you Ava, I'll figure it out. I have to be honest I didn't come here because of Todd, he picked up my call the other day and I just burst out. I had all these possibilities in my mind and I just couldn't process it, but now I can and--"

" And we'll ruin everything they have going on?" She laughed.

" Well... not  exactly." I giggled.
" Thank you for calling me here, I never would have met Ace... on the way here actually..."

" You met him? Oh my gosh. Must've been awkward." She giggled.

" Yeah at first, there was a fight too but it's easy with him. Wow, you're growing up up fast " I smiled looking at her.

" Yeah I kinda have to... I mean, there's no other grown up here." She laughed

" Hey!" I laughed.

She was right. Not about the 'no one here is a grown up part'

" So? What are we gonna do?" Ava asked.

" I uh I don't know... I'm mad at mom and whoever he is. "
