"I'm so glad that you're no longer grounded," Jack said as they walked down the hallways.

"You and me both," Matt said.

"So he punished you for sneaking into the movie underage?"

"Pretty much," Matt said. "As much as I hated it, it wasn't so bad. I just wish I as able to invite you over."

"Yeah," Jack said.

"Hi, guys," Harper greeted them.

"Hey, Harper," Jack greeted her.

"Hey," Matt said.

"Where's Alex?" Jack asked. "Isn't she always with you?"

"Oh, yeah, she's talking to that guy, Riley," Harper said.

"Riley?" Matt repeated. "That baseball player?"

"Yeah," Harper nodded. "They're over there."

Matt felt something bubble in his stomach. He knew what it was.

"Matt?" Jack said, raising his eyebrows.

"Hm?" Matt said, looked at his best friend.

"You okay?" Jack asked.

"Oh, yeah," Matt lied. "I'm okay."

"Give us a sec, Harper," Jack said.

"Okay," Harper said, giving them a confused look.

Jack pulled Matt away.

"What?"

"Dude, you should tell Alex how you feel," Jack said.

"What? No!" Matt said. "She can't know!"

"Why not?"

"Because I don't want to ruin our friendship," Matt said.

"Matt, you'll never know if you don't tell her," Jack said. "She might like you back."

"No, she doesn't like me back," Matt said. "If you can't already tell, Jack, she likes Riley not me."

"Matt, come on," Jack said. "You've been pining after her for years now. Why can't you just tell her you like her?"

"Because," Matt said, "she's been one of my best friends for years and I dont want things to get weird between us if I tell her how I feel and she turns me down. What if she turns me down? What will happen between you, me, Harper and Alex?"

Jack looked at Matt, sympathetically.

"I get that, I really do," Jack said, "but she probably likes you but she's just projecting it on other guys."

"Yeah, I don't think so," Matt said.

He looked over at Alex, who was laughing at something Riley said.
