The forest that sat around Moonstone was absolutely fucking massive. In total it was somewhere between 50 and 60 acres. That was a lot of places to hide and not be found. It wasn't exactly filling me with confidence.
"Do you have any clue as to where they are?" Jekyll asked as we walked together through the trees.
"Nope," I replied as I batted a loose branch from my path, "I had a vision, Harry, I'm not bloody psychic. It's not like I have a supernatural GPS implanted in my head. I've never done this before, in case you hadn't noticed. I've only been a werewolf for a few days."
"No need to get snarky," Jekyll replied.
It's true, there wasn't, although I had to admit that not being able to accurately say where the hideout was annoyed me as much as it frustrated Jekyll and Victoria.
I mean, what's the use of having a vision if there was no concrete way to locate where it had happened? Every fucking clearing in the forest looked pretty much the same to me. It felt hopeless.
We came to a stop in the middle of the ninth clearing we had found. At least, that's how many I had counted. If we had visited any of them more than once I wouldn't have a clue.
I'll stick with the nine.
Victoria walked forward and started looking at the ground, bending down to run her hand over it. She soon stood up, as she had in the other clearings, and shook her head.
Fuck it. There was nothing here.
"It's not here," Victoria said as she walked back towards me and Jekyll. "Let's move on."
I didn't know how long we could keep doing this. I was starting to lose faith in what I had seen.
Had it really been a vision? Or was it a dream just showing me what I wanted to see? Either way, none of my speculations were going to help us find Kian and stop Jonathan from framing me.
"Vic, we need to cover ground," Jekyll said for what felt like the hundredth time. "The longer we spend looking, the more chance that Jonathan could do something to Kian. I need to transform. Hyde can cover twice the ground that I can."
"What makes you so sure he'll help us?" Victoria asked, "You can't control him, Harry."
Harry looked from Victoria to me. He looked determined. I knew he was probably right, but, with us out in the forest vulnerable as we were unleashing Hyde could be a huge mistake. Unfortunately, we didn't have any better options.
We had to take the risk.
"No, I can't control him," Harry admitted, "But, I trust that you can keep him in check, Victoria."
"That's a heck of a responsibility," Victoria replied, "What if something goes wrong? Hyde could get away from us and cause havoc."
"Or, he could help us find what we're looking for," I said.
It was strange to think of Jekyll and Hyde as two different people, but essentially that's exactly what they are. They were two sides of the same coin. Two personalities sharing the same body and mind. It took split personality disorder to a whole new level.
"Alec, you don't know what Hyde is like," Victoria said seriously. "It's a Pandora's box that you don't want to open, even if we could control him, which we can't."
"We don't have a lot of other options," I pointed out as we carried on walking through the forest. "Right now, I'll take any help we can get."
"It is the only way," Harry added, "Believe me, I don't take this decision lightly."
"Well," Victoria said after a moment, "I can see I'm outvoted. We just better hope this plan works."
Harry nodded and pulled a thin glass vile filled with a green liquid from his jacket pocket, almost as if he had just been waiting for the chance to whip it out and take a sip. It crossed my mind just how dangerously addictive turning into Hyde had become for the original Doctor Jekyll, and I wondered if I should be worried about Harry.
"Here goes nothing," Jekyll said.
He took off his glasses first, putting them safely in his coat pocket, then opened the vile and quickly downed all of the liquid inside before dropping it to the floor where it smashed open. Then he screamed.
A full-on, blood curdling, scream. Then Jekyll seemed to shrink down to about half his normal size, his skin bubbled and turned black before a misshapen looking figure then collapsed in his place onto the floor.
Hyde.
His skin was blotchy, almost grey in colour. His dark hair was dirty, unkempt and hanging down past his shoulders. Hyde looked up at me and Victoria with a wide grin. It was terrifying. I felt goosebumps pop up all over my body. The feeling was hard to explain, but there was something odd about Hyde's appearance. Something that was unnatural and defiantly wrong.
Hyde struggled up from the ground with difficulty as he was still dressed in Jekyll's suit. He yanked the trousers up and glared at me and Victoria. When he spoke it was with a deep croaky voice, a heck of a difference from the smooth tones of Harry Jekyll. It was unnerving, to say the least.
"Ha! You need my help." He barked, flashing a crooked smile, "You must be desperate. Jekyll doesn't like to set me free. Scared of his own shadow that one. I could run away now and be free of that bloody bore forever!"
"Hyde," Victoria said, addressing the little man. "You know what we need. If I have to bind you to me to stop you escaping, trust me I will."
Hyde sneered as he stared up at Victoria. I really don't know how she met his glare. I was absolutely shitting a brick, but somehow she kept calm.
"Trust him to use a Witch to do his dirty work. The coward!" Hyde spat.
He had a big temper for such a short man. If he wasn't so fucking freaky it would almost be comical.
"The fucking yellow-bellied coward!"
As Hyde continued ranting, I was pretty sure anyone who happened to be in the immediate vicinity would know that we were here. Especially any SPECTRE agents, who I reminded myself, were still out here somewhere. If they found us we would be in a whole lot of fucking trouble.
Then a cracking sound reverberated around the eerily quiet forest.
I looked over at Victoria, the look of terror on her face told me she had heard it too. Hyde was still too concentrated on going off about Jekyll to notice anything was wrong.
Victoria quickly put her hand up and muttered a spell under her breath. Hyde turned around, suddenly unable to speak as a thin layer of skin now covered his mouth. He looked absolutely furious and resorted to stamping his feet instead, luckily Jekyll's too long trousers dampened the sound.
"Quiet!" Victoria whispered, and he suddenly seemed to get the point.
My enhanced hearing allowed me to hear, probably better than either Victoria or Hyde could. I heard the undergrowth as it moved out of the way of something. Strangely, I couldn't hear any footsteps. Weird. Whatever it was though, it was coming towards us fast.
Victoria waved her hand again and gave Hyde his mouth back, but he kept it shut as the three of us turned to face whatever was now heading our way.
