As the top part of the elevator submerged under the ground, around us there was a moment of pure darkness. We carried on going slowly down before suddenly dim light returned and we found ourselves in a large space that used the natural rock formations to curve the ceiling up into an airy space that shouldn't have been possible underground.
"Follow me," Kian said as the elevator hissed open.
As my eyes adjusted to the darkness of the tunnel I started to see further into the gloom. The edge was as long as it was wide and would have comfortably fit four or five double-decker buses without any problems. Several tunnels were leading off of the room, each one lighting up as we walked past.
"Right, just keep behind me," Kian said as we reached the furthest tunnel from the elevator.
As with the other tunnels, the lights burst into life as we reached within range of the motion sensors, but even with the light, it was impossible to see the end. Kian led the way, the rocky floor surface the only thing keeping my mind occupied as I tried not to trip up over the loose lumps of rock that covered it. Then, a round metal door appeared ahead of us, seemingly out of nowhere, blocking the path ahead.
Kian strolled up to the door and looked at it, his blood-red eyes narrowed in frustration.
"I thought they cleared this tunnel," he said putting a hand on the metal door. "This barrier has gone up recently. A couple of days at most. Oh, I am going to kick JB's ass!"
"Care to tell me what we're doing down here?" I asked after an awkward moment of silence, "Because, right now, I don't have a fucking clue what you're going on about and if those agents catch up with us we have nowhere to hide."
Kian looked at me, but before he could answer my question a small round hatch opened up in the middle of the door that was blocking up the tunnel and a single blood-red eye looked out at us suspiciously.
"State your name and the password of the day," a voice asked from the other side of the hatch.
Kian stepped back into the eyes line of vision and smiled, his fangs glinting in the harsh artificial light of the tunnel, "Gareth!" he laughed, "How come you're stuck on guard duty? I thought that you would rather be at the Blood Bank getting yourself high on some random drunk's O Negative..."
The eye in the hatch squinted at Kian a moment, and then widened in shock. "Kian Richards, is that really you?"
"Yeah, it's me," Kian confirmed.
The hatch suddenly swung shut and the door itself scratched open on heavy hinges from the inside, revealing a young vampire in camo shorts and a matching jacket, his long black hair styled up in tight dreadlocks. His skin was dark but had an oddly pale hue to it like he hadn't seen daylight in years, and his blood-red eyes and prominent fangs were on full display.
The vampire, Gareth, was smiling, but he didn't take his eyes off of me. Normally, I would be flattered if I guy showed that much interest in me, but I had a feeling that Gareth wasn't exactly bowled over by my good looks.
"What's with the beaten up lycan?" He asked Kian, his eyes still boring into mine. For a moment, I wondered if he could read minds like Kian.
"We're both going to need a place to stay for a while," Kian said, "and, I'm going to need to talk to JB."
Gareth looked away from me and shook his head at Kian, "You've been away for too long, Kian," he said sadly, "JB isn't in charge anymore."
"Okay, so who is in charge then?" Kian asked him confused.
"Elliot." Gareth replied, "Trust me, he's not going to be happy about this. Nobody but members of The Church are allowed to enter the Circle. I'll have to take you both in as prisoners."
