I stared into the only tunnel left open after the walls of the tunnel settled. The darkness seemed to be calling to me.
Kian was down there.
So was Jonathan.
I had to fucking get a grip.
I hadn't come this far trying to save Kian, and clear my name only to lose my nerve at the last hurdle. No way.
As I stepped forward my eyes burned. Bright fluorescent lights beamed down, automatically lighting up the tunnel and our way into danger."Alec."
I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned to see Victoria, a worried look on her face.
"Let's be careful, this is a trap, remember?" she said.
I knew it was, but honestly I didn't care. Either way, the tunnel would still lead me to Jonathan and Kian. I had to take it, trap or not.
"I know."
I didn't want to let on to Victoria. She wouldn't approve if she knew what I was really thinking.
She nodded at my words and went around me, leading the way into the tunnel with green flames flickering in her hand. We did take a cautious approach. Victoria led the way, followed by me and Jekyll with Grace following on after, just in case we were attacked from behind.
I couldn't help but think it wouldn't make a difference. Jonathan had taken Kian for a reason, he wanted me to follow him. He wanted me to join him.
Well, he can fuck right off as there is no way that will ever happen. He would have to kill me first.
The tunnel was shorter than the last one, but it curved round like a large snake, so it felt like we were going around for much longer than we actually did. It came to an abrupt end as we reached a large, round metal door that had no handle.
"How do we get inside?" Grace asked, "I mean, I could float through—"
She stopped speaking as the door slowly swung inwards to let us enter. We all stood for a moment, just looking at the darkness on the other side. Nobody seemed to want to head inside, but I knew I had to.
Jonathan was waiting for me.
I stepped forward. As I did lights burst into life illuminating the room. It took a bit of time for my eyes to adjust. At first glance the room seemed empty, just a large stone chamber, but once I looked again I saw familiar long blonde hair.
Kian.
I rushed towards him, stopping again as I saw he was chained up to a support pillar, shirtless, with a large gold crucifix hanging from a chain around his neck. I could see it burning into his skin causing smoke to rise up in little curls.
Shit.
I quickly pulled the crucifix off him, throwing it into a far corner. Kian opened his eyes and looked weakly up at me. The cross shape was still burning red lines into his chest leaving a blistered outline behind.
"Hey," I said, tears running down my cheeks, "I'm here."
"I see that," Kian said, coughing violently as he tried to speak. "Get me out of these fucking ropes..."
I nodded and went to work pulling apart the bonds that were holding Kian to the pillar. The ropes came away easily. I had a horrible feeling it had been the crucifix that had stopped Kian from getting away.
I heard footsteps behind me and Grace gasping. I pulled apart the last rope and helped Kian up as his legs were unable to support his weight.
"Oh my God," Victoria said as she saw Kian. She used a few quick healing charms on Kian's wounds.
