VICTORIA

"For how long Your Majesty?"

You can't question the ruling monarch when he or she gives an order but that's what I did. And I quickly realized that mistake.

"My apologies, Your Highness."

"It's alright. I know this is too much. But this needs to be between you and me for a while."

"Is there anything you'd like me to do, Your Majesty?"

Even if I wasn't looking at the King, I knew he was looking at me like he was pondering on what to say.

"How much does your Lady Maid know about this?" The King asked seconds later.

"Only that we're in touch with Princess Charlotte." I answered.

"That's good enough." He hummed in approval. "For now, head back to the university and attend your classes as is. My month-long investigation already provided me with enough evidence. All that's left is to catch them in action."

Gusto ko sanang tanungin kung sino tinutukoy n'ya pero pinigilan ko yung sarili ko.

"Once you get out of this room, tell your Lady Maid that I have something for her to do."

"I have one last question, Your Majesty." I said.

"Go on."

"Is King Charles of Great Citrine in Great Amber disguised as a student in Amber University?"

The moment of silence that followed made the atmosphere feel heavy that it felt like I couldn't breathe. I don't know if I'm just overthinking things but the King is looking at me meaningfully.

"He is. Make sure none of the Great Jade exchange students in your course leaves the department gathering later. Especially this guy."

My hands were shaking as I reached for the paper that the King took out from one of the folders resting on his desk. Once it was in my hand, it's still facing down.

A photopaper. That's what the paper felt like against my hand.

Gusto kong makita kung sino yung nasa picture. Gustung-gusto pero natatakot ako. Ni hindi ko alam kung bakit ako natatakot kahit alam kong wala naman akong ginawang masama.

"You didn't know. It's alright, Victoria."

"I didn't even flip the picture yet, Your Majesty." Sabi ko.

"But you have an idea." Sabi n'ya kaya napayuko ako. "You're a good kid, Victoria. And a wonderful woman. I know that this must be too much for you but I'm glad that you're my son's wife. Our people may or may not look at you differently for this, but what's important is that, we know the truth."

Hearing that was assuring. It felt like it was Dad that told me that. Dad says stuff like that which is why I couldn't help but tear up.

"Oh, Victoria don't tear up. I don't need your father wreaking havoc in my dreams for making you cry."

"I'm sorry I couldn't help it, Your Majesty."

"And I told you before that you can call me Dad or Father when it's just the family around."

Natawa na lang ako sa sinabi n'ya pero napahugot ako nang malalim na hininga. At nang maibuga ko yung hangin ay binaliktad ko yung picture.

"I'm not letting him out of my sight." Sabi ko.

"Be careful, we don't know what he could do next." The King said.

*~~*

I made it in time for my subject before lunch time at hindi na ako nagulat na wala na naman si Clinton doon. He's definitely missing a lot but thank goodness he's legitimately excused for the classes he's missing.
