When I first met Luke, he'd just gotten into trouble. I'd been driving with Aunty Maggie when she'd gotten the call. I can't remember exactly what had happened that specific time but I know it involved the police.
She never even introduced us, we just saw each other for a few seconds before she decided she didn't want me there and took me home.
Aunty Maggie wanted to completely separate that life from me and I guess I know why. Besides the fact that I've always had an addictive personality to all things destructive, I knew she didn't want him badly influencing me. So that evening she'd taken me home after finding out what was happening, then she went right back after she'd dropped me off.
After that, I'd met him a few more times at random. A lot of the time he'd done something illegal and needed help getting out of it.
I didn't like him for a while after I'd met him for the first time. I couldn't understand why Aunty Maggie had so much patience for him, clearly he didn't want to change. She would help him out of trouble but he'd then get right back into a different kind of trouble. What was the point?
But Aunty Maggie? she'd never given up on him no matter what.
I'd realized I didn't really know what he'd been through. Aunty Maggie eventually explained his life story to me and I'd cried about it.
He'd gone back to Juvie, but for a while that time around and I hadn't seen him since.
I put my car on park once I arrive at the restaurant I'm meeting him at and I get out soon after. I'm late. I was too busy trying to look cute.
I notice guys staring at me and I smile back shyly.
Gym and eating healthy has gotten me looking all types of good and I'm slowly getting used to the looks, but it's still all very new to me.
I was never really a big girl but I did have chubbiness on certain parts of my body. It's all gone now and I'm loving my new look.
I'm trying really hard to not let myself turn into a cocky asshole but my new found confidence has me walking like I'm on the runway.
I'm wearing a pair of blue tight jeans, a nice tight vest and my new Christian Louboutin stilettos I'd gotten myself after my promotion.
I enter the fancy restaurant and I'm escorted to where my date is seated.
One other thing I'm yet to get used to is the respect I'm all of a sudden getting from people. I'm no longer disregarded and looked at funny when I enter fancy places. Something that's highly problematic but is also a topic for another day.
Luke stands up once he spots me. He gives me a kiss on the cheek then takes the chair out for me to have a seat and I thank him. He's wearing a full suit with a vest instead of a t-shirt. He looks good and I feel way underdressed.
"Wow," he simply says seemingly reading my mind and I calm down. "Wow yourself," I say back to him.
I remember him looking really buff at such a young age, I guess he still likes working out. It shows.
I've never been in this restaurant before. When I was googling it, I saw it's usually booked up months in advance and only certain people are made an exception to be squeezed in.
There were a couple of reviews of people saying they haven't been able to get a reservation for months. So,
"How did we get a reservation so fast?" I finally ask him as we engage in conversation. He only asked me to go out just the other day.
"The owner is my good buddy," he says simply and I make an 'O' shape with my lips.
"I helped him out with some legal issues and let's just say he's still thankful," he further explains as the chef makes his way over to us.
The chef?
"Luke what's good my man?" He greets my date and they embrace each other manly. "Hey Scottie, it's good to see you," he responds to the man before he looks at me to say,
"This is Mia, I've known her for a while. We're just over here catching up," he introduces me and I smile then shake his hand.
"What are you two having tonight?" He asks and only then I pick my menu up to see what the hype is about this restaurant. "Oh that won't be necessary," Luke says to me.
"Give us your special tonight," he then says to the chef before he leaves.
"Scott is just about the greatest chef in town. I promise you'll want to come here all the time." He explains to me and I smile back at him.
I don't know about the second part though. I've never really gotten the hype about fancy restaurants. I still prefer my fast food chains.
"You're quite the man here huh?" I ask him after the waiter pours the fancy wine in our wine glasses and I thank him. Fancy is my default word today.
"I've been here a few times," he answers and I'm about to ask something else but,
"What about you lovely Mia? I've hardly heard what you've been up to," he says and I almost choke on my wine. My life is not nearly as interesting as his.
"Uh well, I have that accounting job. And I'm officially a proud gym regular," I say and he laughs. That is literally my life.
"C'mon Mia, there's gotta be more. Look at you, you've grown so much from that insecure kid who couldn't look at people in their eyes," he says with a chuckle and I roll my eyes at him.
"That kid grew up," I say to him then take a sip of the sweet but not too sweet wine.
"I had the biggest crush on that girl. But I specifically remember her having a thing for someone else," he says now sipping from his own glass.
We're both blushing a bit but it's like we're trying to play it off with our wine glasses.
I had no idea Luke had a thing for me. He was always such an asshole to me but I guess looking back it makes sense. I've now seen too many movies where the asshole turns out to have a thing for the victim.
"I didn't know that," I say as we continue with our smile fest. "Yea. Did you ever end up with the guy?" He asks and I hide my discomfort.
Now that I think of it, Luke and Tristan never officially met. They saw each other a few times but I don't think Tristan remembers him.
"He got married," I say to him and he responds saying, "well good for me then," with a smirk that I actually don't want to slap off his face.
A few moments later, our food arrive. I feel thankful because my tummy was starting to cry. But when the waiter lifts the cover to reveal the tiniest dish I've ever seen, I feel like crying.
"Thanks," I then say sweetly to him. This is the great chef's work?
"You good there?" Luke asks me seemingly seeing my frustration.
"Not really," I say honestly at him.
"D'you wanna go to McDonald's?" He asks and I shake my head wildly in approval, making him laugh.
He then pays for the bill, thanks the chef and we're soon on our way to my favorite place in the universe.
I might've told him how much I love McDonald's and I'm thankful that he listens."
We stay up late at the 24/7 restaurant just conversing and reminiscing on old times.
