"When's the official conference?"

"Next weekend."

"Oh damn it. Can't I come?"

"No."

"Pretty please."

"Mia, you know you can't come."

"That sucks."

It really does. All the hard work I've put in on the McKenna account and I can't even be at the first meeting.

"You could come if you beg for your job back." He says annoying me.

I won't even be introduced as the person behind the final written report. To them I don't exist.

"Will you at least take pictures and send them to me?"

"No."

"No?"

"Mia, this is going to be a formal meet up. I can't be there taking selfies like an Instagram model."

Now that we won the company. We have to write another report with our plans for the account. Jake and I have been up for hours working on it and we're finally satisfied with the end result. It's now almost midnight and we're sitting with our fourth bottle of wine.

"Are you excited?" I ask now pouring the substance into a mug for the umpteenth time that evening. Jake knows I like to drink my wine in a mug. He finds it weird but he lets me.

"Not as much as the old man." He responds taking the bottle to pour for himself too.

He doesn't talk much about his dad and since he brought him up, I can't help but,

"How's Mr Romano doing?" I haven't seen the older, bitter Romano since he'd gone on his surprise retirement. He doesn't even pop into the office to say hi. I wonder who he's being a pain to now.

"Good." He responds almost immediately. He doesn't even blink when he says that. It's like an automated response. Like that's what he tells people to shut them up.

"Good?"

"Yes."

"How good?"

"Mia!"

"What? That's incredibly vague Jake. He's your father and he's just gone on a retirement. How's that going for him?"

Their relationship has always seemed odd to me. They're too formal with each other, or maybe I've lost touch with how a parental relationship is supposed to be since I haven't had one in a while. But he doesn't even call him dad, that's weird right?

"What do you want me to say Mia?" He asks with a shrug.

"That he's taken on golfing and he's traveling the world. Something." I explain.

"Well, for starters. He's getting a divorce."

I know Mr Romano senior was on wife number 6. He was getting married just a few months ago, so you can imagine my shock at the fact that he's already getting a divorce again. Poor young girl clearly couldn't take him being home all the time. I only used to see him a few hours a day, I can't imagine living with him.

"Well that's fresh." I say making him chuckle.

"You have no idea."

His reaction tells me he's also sick of his father's never-ending nuptials. Probably because he's forced to remember all the girls' names, that's got to be exhausting.

I'm a nosy person, and he knows this. In fact, he never lets me forget it, so I know he's not surprised by my follow up question,

"Where's your mom?"
