"R200 000 for a bag?!"
Does it carry itself around?
"Yup. And that's the cheapest we've got."
Even the lady who works here thinks that's ridiculous, you can see it in her eyes.
"Mam, Birkin bags are incredibly unique." The manager explains to me. Clearly that's something she tells people on a daily.
They wouldn't even let me in the shop until I told them who my grandmother was. Apparently only certain people can have the luxury of being sold this incredibly expensive piece of garbage. I am shocked that this is the world we live in.
I don't care how rich I am, I'm not getting myself a bag that's anything over a R1000. But this is not for me so,
"How does the purchasing work?" I close my eyes in anguish as I ask this. If I give myself more time to think about it I'll change my mind.
"Mam are you able to have your grandmother on the phone?"
Wow! Now I have to prove that she's really my grandma? I can't wait to tell my grandkids about this.
"Yes of course."
My voice is the opposite of what I'm feeling. The last thing I want is to be thrown out of here, it was a struggle enough to get in. Plus, not getting this bag would completely ruin my plan so,
"Hi Grandma." I greet as soon as she answers the phone.
"Mia! This better be important. If my nails get messed up, you're paying for them."
My grandma ladies and gentleman. Did I mention I have her on speaker?
"Mrs Kwali, forgive us for intruding your pampering. It's Mary from the Hermés store. We've got your lovely granddaughter here and ..."
I'm not even kidding. She hung up the phone.
That serves her right because I don't know who gave her permission to speak on my phone.
"That's certainly Mrs Kwali alright." She says chuckling nervously.
"Ms Oliphant, please come over this way so we can proceed with the purchase."
The whole process takes forever but I finally leave after I'm told it'll be delivered to me. One part of my plan is over, now comes the difficult part.
When I asked Tristan what the one thing Meghan wanted more than anything in the world was, he'd told me it was a bag. How expensive could a piece of phone and wallet carrier be right? Apparently it could cost more than your house.
I didn't even know what a birkin bag was until this afternoon. My heart breaks at the amount of money I've just spent but it's for the greater good. I need to fix my relationship with Meghan because whether we like it or not, we're part of each other's lives now.
"Please don't leave," is the first thing I say when she enters her home only to turn back around.
Tristan told her he had a surprise waiting for her at home and it's no secret I was the last thing she'd been expecting.
"I got you something."
I have to show her the bag first to convince her to stay.
"Tristan told me you've always wanted this and ..."
"Is that a birkin?" Her face looks like if your dog told you he loved you.
I nod my head and she walks slowly towards me, like the bag would burn into flames if she walked too fast. I've never seen her so astonished before.
"How did you?"
Her words seem to disappear from her brain. But I know what she means so,
"Yea I'm kinda rich now."
I don't know how to explain it.
"Mia, I just - I..." she tries to say something but she's getting emotional. So I put the bag on a nearby table then go to give her the biggest embrace I've ever given her and I feel her crying on my shoulder. I'm surprised she doesn't fight me off.
If I had known this was the reaction I was going to get, I would've gotten the bag even in my broke days. I would've gotten a loan because her excitement is priceless.
I then sit her on the couch as I coo her to calm down.
She puts her head on the crook of my neck as we hold onto each other's hands. I've never had a sister but it feels like this is how it would be if I had one.
"I'm so sorry Meghan, for everything."
I whisper as she continues laying her head on my shoulder. She keeps quiet but she's still holding on to my hand.
There's a certain warmth that comes with that.
Meg is an amazing person who I actually would've liked to have been friends with from the start. My jealousy towards her was what prohibited any chances of us bonding. I always just wanted to hate her even when I couldn't think of a reason to.
Yes she doesn't have a lot in common with Tristan but I can absolutely see what drew him to her, beyond her looks. She has a good heart, just like him.
"Mia, I'm the one who's sorry."
She surprises me.
"Yes what you said to me was wrong. But it wasn't that crazy for me start treating you like I did."
"Meg no - I..."
"Please let me finish Mia."
I keep quiet.
"When I found out I just.. - I really love him. More than anything. I don't want to loose him. I can't lose him." Her eyes are red from all the crying, I can't help but shed a few tears of my own.
"You've always been there for him. I am nothing compared to you."
This is all so shocking to me. I didn't know she felt this way at all.
"Mia, I've always been jealous of you. Of what you have with him."
The irony of it all is overwhelming.
Meghan is too flawless to be associated with jealousy. I never at all would have guessed that's how she felt about me.
"Meg, Tristan loves you."
I want to assure her that she has nothing to worry about.
"Tristan has dated and dated, and dated. But never has he ever gotten even close to where he is with you."
Even though he always talked about getting married and settling down one day, I never thought he'd actually do it. I thought he was going to be a player forever.
"Tristan is in love with you. Never ever doubt that."
My mind takes me to a couple of month ago when he'd been emotional at the thought of losing her.
Meghan chuckles, confusing me. And then she picks her head up from my shoulders to just stare in front of us before,
"You really don't know do you?"
My confused look seems to answer her question because,
"Mia, Tristan is in love with you."
