"I can't lose her." Is all his lips seem to be able to utter as he drunkly straddles himself on the couch.
"You're not going to." I say to him again that afternoon as I finish up making him something to eat.
I'd decided to make his favorite meal in hopes it'll make him feel a little better. I let the bacon get extra crispy and even let it burn a little. Just the way he likes it.
I then put the buttered toast, eggs and bacon on a plate before making my way to him. I put his meal on the table then head to the kitchen again to refill his glass of water.
"There." I say handing it to him and he wastes no time downing it. I know he had weed too because he's really thirsty. He then grabs his plate to start stuffing his face and I smile at the fact that he doesn't let time pass between bites.
He's always had a very unhealthy relationship with bacon and eggs and I'm glad to see it still remains. Unlike everything else.
"When is she coming back?" I ask him as I stand up to get my own glass of water. I need it after the crazy day I had at the park.
"In a week." He says almost immediately to me and I know he's been really bothered about it.
"She's gonna leave me." He says again and I ignore the urge to roll my eyes. He's being really dramatic.
"Meg loves you Tristan. She's not gonna leave you because you went to some stupid strip club." I say to him now finishing my glass of water.
Tristan sent me a series of text messages earlier today. After the first one he'd sent, he'd followed up with about ten more texts. He even sent me an 'SOS', which we only used to use whenever one of us was in an emergency and needed the other. So you can imagine how fast I got to him.
When I got to his house I found him laying drunk on his couch with a bunch of empty bottles of alcohol surrounding him. He was a mess.
I had him cleaned up, picked up all the bottles then just now fixed him something to eat.
He says that Meghan is out of the country again, for the third time this month and they had a fight before she left. He'd accused her of always choosing her work over him and her defense was that he'd known what she did for a living even before they started dating. He begged her to stay but she said she needed to go. He was so broken that he went and got himself drunk then ended up at a strip club.
Now he feels guilty for doing that and thinks Meghan is going to leave him. Ridiculous.
"If she loves me so much why did she leave even when I begged her not to?" He puts his plate down after finishing his food then lays back on the couch to stare at the ceiling.
"Because that's her job. You knew that when you met her." I say to him honestly. He can't expect the girl to stop doing what she loves because of him.
"Did anything happen at the strip club Tristan?" I then ask genuinely curious. He's a lot of things but a cheater isn't one of them. But also his extreme overreaction has me thinking what if. People change don't they?
He looks at me with a look I'm not familiar with. It's like a combination of disappointment and hurt.
"Nothing happened." He replies simply to me seemingly now void of emotion. I know he wants to say more but he stops himself likely because we're still kind of walking on eggshells with each other.
He lives in a different house that he'd bought for the two of them and the fact that this is my first time seeing it makes me uncomfortable. Would she even be ok that I'm here right now?
"Then you have nothing to worry about. You were upset and you did something she probably won't be happy with but you'll talk through it and figure it out. That's what couples do." I respond to him after a while.
"I just feel like sometimes I need my wife here with me. It really sucks that I have to see her in shifts."
I get what he's going through, I do. Having someone who's constantly not around sounds really crappy. But also, he knows that that's her passion. I also remember him loving the fact that she wasn't always around as he needed his space. I don't tell him that though,
I instead say, "I'm sure she wants to be here with you too."
He pauses for a bit before looking at me to say,
"You don't look like you were at work." He states simply.
"I wasn't." I respond to him.
"This is a lovely house you got." I then say to stop him from asking further questions.
"Yea. Meg says it's 'Instagram approved'. Whatever that means." He says and I chuckle.
We sit there in silence before he lays down to put his head on my thighs then lifts his legs up to put them on the couch's edge.
"Nugget," he then calls surprising me. I haven't heard that so long that it sounds so foreign.
"Yea?" I respond to him gently.
"I miss you." He says melting my heart. I ignore the slight buzz of my phone ringing again in my back pocket. I don't need to check to see who it is.
My friend needs me right now and that's where I'll be.
I feel him slowly starting to fall asleep and I tell him to stand up so he can go to the bedroom.
He walks there slowly and I quickly run to the kitchen to get him another glass of water, then I follow him to the bedroom and put it on his bedside table.
He pats the other side of his bed after laying down and I take off my shoes to join him. He doesn't need to tell me what that means.
He dozes off not too long after and I stare at the ceiling in thought.
Luke almost kissed me, holy shit. I left in such a rush without explaining anything and I know that's why he keeps phoning me. I hope he doesn't think I'm avoiding him, I'm not. I just need to be here for my friend right now. I'll call him when I know he's ok.
I turn my body so that I'm now facing Tristan then move closer to cuddle him and he puts his hand over my shoulder.
"I love you Nugget." He whispers to me.
"I love you too."
