FIVE (WHAT'S THE)

MATTER WITH ME

—✧—✧—✧—✧—✧—

UNDER USUAL CIRCUMSTANCES, Delia knows that she would've been excited for her very first Defence Against the Dark Arts class. Well — she still is — but after what happened with Draco she doesn't know if she should be. Because unsurprisingly, her friends aren't.

And, well, there's also the small fact that she does not like Moody. Not just because of what happened with Draco, but because he creeps her out. He's creepy! Delia doesn't tolerate much. But one of the things that she tolerates least, is creepy people. (And bugs. And people with bad manners. And last season's clothes. And—well, you get the point.)

And then there's the fact that she's also worried because she hasn't gotten the chance to talk to Harry and the others yet, and now she's pretty much started counting down the days until one of them 'accidentally' lets her secret slip and her friends all turn their backs on her.

She should start preparing for the worst-case scenario. But the thing is, she doesn't want to. She should — and she knows this. But she really likes it here. She's only been here for like, three days, but she really, really likes it here. She likes her new friends, and she actually likes the classes. OK, maybe that's because she was a 'muggle' (still hates that word) for the first fourteen years of her life and didn't know anything about the Wizarding World.

So maybe she's a little bit excited for her very first Defence Against the Dark Arts class, even though she's pretending like she isn't because the rest of her friends certainly aren't.

"I don't know why they won't just give the position to Snape," Pansy complains as the two of them walk to the classroom.

Snape... their Head of House. The only person in the entire school who seems to favour Slytherins over Gryffindors. It's most definitely because he's their Head of House, and was a Slytherin himself back when he went to Hogwarts. Delia figures that she should be grateful, and she is, of course, but she can't get over the weird look that he gave her after her first class when she went to introduce herself.

They walk into the classroom and pick a seat in the middle of the room. Pansy wanted to sit towards the back, but Delia wanted to sit towards the front. ("How am I supposed to be the best student if I can't even see?") It's a compromise. And Delia finds herself thinking about how she's already making compromises for her new best friend; she never did that with Julianne.

Before, she would've convinced Pansy to do what Delia wants to do — but now, now she's compromising. She really likes Pansy. And she doesn't want to find out how Pansy'll react if she ever finds out that Delia's parents are muggles.
