As the school year began, Y/N didn't see much of Draco.
He had walked past her carriage on the Hogwarts Express, but he didn't stop. She could've sworn he looked like he wanted to.
It was as if the blonde was having an internal argument with himself each time the Gryffindor girl was in his vicinity. Y/N thought back to the day at the bookstore when Lucius Malfoy had interrupted their conversation. Maybe his father had warned him not to speak to the girl again, or maybe Draco had decided on his own that she wasn't worth the trouble. Either way, Y/N felt oddly helpless. It was easier to just let things be.
As the Gryffindor and Slytherin students often had shared classes, the Malfoy and the Weasley were within mere feet of each other numerous times a day. Y/N knew Draco didn't want to associate with her, so to avoid catching eyes with him, she kept her head down, or faced to the front of the classroom.
"I'm going to be putting you into pairs for the homework task" Professor McGonagall explained during one of their transfiguration lessons.
As she walked around the classroom, she delegated a partner to each student.
"Miss Weasley" She said as she stood in front of Y/N's desk.
The professor looked around to see who else didn't have a partner. When she realised there was only one student left, she sighed.
"I guess you will be with, Mr Malfoy."
Ron turned around so quickly in his chair that he felt slightly dizzy. He started at the platinum blonde boy with shock etched on his face. Draco however, just smirked at him. Ron began to wonder what Molly was going to say this time. A vision of his Mum screaming "hOw cOuLd yOu leT yOuR siStEr hAnG arOuNd a mALfOy aGAiN" entered his mind and he shuddered.
Meanwhile, Y/N and Draco had turned to look at each other.
Professor McGonagall was the one who had given them that detention last year. The expression of regret on her face told them she hadn't forgotten.
As Draco moved to occupy the seat next to Y/N, the professor leaned in as if she was about to whisper to them.
"The last time I witnessed you two together it ended in detention. Let's not have any rule breaking this time, understand?"
The pair nodded their heads as McGonagall turned to walk away.
"So, uh. Did you want to meet in the library to get this done then?" Draco spoke, breaking the silence.
"No I was thinking I'd break into the Slytherin common room. Or you could break into Gryffindor. Or we could just meet in the hall after dark like last time so you can turn me in again." Y/N replied, her words laced with heavy sarcasm.
Upon hearing her joking tone, the blonde boy immediately visibly relaxed.
"Oh yes, why don't we break into Dumbledores office while we're at it, go big or go home."
As the pair laughed together, other students turned their heads towards them.
Y/N realised how odd it must look to someone else seeing the Slytherin prince and the eldest Weasley daughter getting along. She stifled her laugh and cleared her throat, as the people previously observing the interaction turned away.
"What day is best for you then? For the library?"
"Tomorrow should be fine." Draco replied, giving the girl a small, barely-there smile.
He opened his mouth to say something else to her, but before he could even get the first word out, the bell sounded throughout the castle, indicating the end of class.
"See you tomorrow, then" Y/N smiled before she ran to catch up with Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
Draco watched as the Weasley girl skipped away, eventually disappearing from his view.
He had never been so eager to do a homework task.
