Over the next few months, the Gryffindor girl noticed a change in Draco's demeanour when it came to her.
If he passed her when walking through the castle halls, he would no longer just give her a one word greeting, but stop and ask her how her day was going.
At meal times in the Great Hall, the boy would no longer find himself in heavy conversation with his fellow Slytherins, instead spending his time trying to catch Y/N's eyes. On the days he seemed to be feeling extra brave, he'd even make the effort to march over to the Gryffindor table to talk to her (much to Ron, Harry, and Hermione's dismay).
"If I didn't know better, I'd say he was obsessed with you Y/N" Hermione joked one evening as Ron pretended to vomit.
It wasn't just the golden trio who noticed Draco's new attitude. The rest of the students in their year often caught the pair sharing smiles in classes, and laughing together while walking around the school grounds.
Everyone was so intrigued at the sight of a Malfoy and a Weasley getting along well, that the pair became the talk of the castle. So much so that by the beginning of third year, the rumour of them being more than friends was quite established.
"I wish they would stop making things up about my sister and Malfoy" Ron groaned, pointing his head in the direction of a group of giggling gossiping girls.
"How do you know they're making things up? Could be true." Harry replied, immediately regretting his remark once he saw Ron's face turn as red as his hair.
"Well, I think they're friends" Hermione boasted as she joined in on the conversation.
But she wasn't the only one.
"Talking about me, are you?"
The trio turned around and saw Malfoy leaning against a nearby tree.
"What happens between Y/N and I is none of your concern" The Slytherin declared while displaying his signature smirk.
The three Gryffindors turned to face each other again.
"There's definitely something going on if he's out here saying that" Ron sighed as Harry patted his back.
"Let's not believe anything till we hear it from Y/N, alright?" Hermione comforted.
Harry and Hermione had done their best to distract Ron from the idea that his sister was quite friendly with Malfoy. They were successful in their efforts up until their shared afternoon class with Slytherin.
As Professor Snape spoke in his usual monotone, Ron caught a sight of a paper crane in his peripheral vision. By the time the ginger had turned his head, the crane was no longer in view, but it was obvious where it came from. The platinum blonde boy he currently despised.
Hoping (praying, more like), that crane wasn't being sent to his own sister, he quickly whipped around to look at Y/N. A paper crane had just landed in her hand.
The girl smiled at the sight of it and immediately turned to look at Draco, as if this wasn't the first time he'd made her a flying bird out of paper.
"Open it!" the Slytherin boy mouthed to her as he grinned widely.
With anticipation, Ron watched as his sister carefully unfolded the crane.
"Oh just bloody rip it" Ron thought to himself in his head, noticing how delicately she treated Malfoy's letter.
As Y/N's eyes travelled down the piece of parchment, her smile grew. When she was finished reading, she turned back to Draco and silently giggled, a blush very clear on her pale face.
Ron turned to Harry, who was now also watching the scene unfold.
"Did he just send my sister a love letter?!"
But the dark haired boy said nothing as he shrugged his shoulders.
Ron didn't have time to turn back to Malfoy or his sister to get clues on the contents of the letter, as Snape threatened to award him a detention if he continued to talk in his class.
He made a mental note to ask Y/N about it at dinner.
