"PERCY!"
"FRED!"
"GEORGE!"
"RON!"
"Y/N!"
Y/N awoke to the sound of her mother calling her siblings down for breakfast.
It was the day she had been looking forward to all summer, the day she would finally get to go to Hogwarts. Her excitement overpowered her nerves as she raced out of the bedroom she shared with Ginny and practically leapt down the stairs. Although Ginny wouldn't be going to Hogwarts till the next year, she also woke up early to see her siblings off on the school train.
Breakfast in the Weasley house was usually a rushed mess, but this morning it was worse than usual (if that was even possible). With her father being at work, it was practically up to Molly to make sure the six children had a sufficient breakfast, got dressed, and that the five who were making the journey to Hogwarts, had a years worth of school supplies packed neatly for the ride to the train station. If that wasn't enough, the seven of them had to quickly make their way to the train station together, which was a task in itself as the Weasley's weren't the timeliest bunch.
After what seemed like the fastest morning of her life, Y/N found herself at Platform nine and three quarters, boarding the Hogwarts Express.
"Don't be a stranger! Make sure you write to us! I want to hear about EVERYTHING!" Molly yelled to her children as they entered the train carriage. Y/N turned and waved to her mother before stepping into the train. She hoped her mother would get to enjoy some peace and quiet while the Weasley house was mostly empty, and that she wouldn't worry about them too much, but that was a useless thing to hope.
The train was packed with students new and old, so packed that Y/N ended up sitting in a compartment with Ron. Along the way they were joined by a boy called Harry (who Y/N had heard a lot about from her father), and a girl called Hermione, who Y/N was very happy to have in their company, as she was no longer the only girl.
After a very long journey, the train finally arrived at Hogsmeade station, and everyone rushed to make their way into Hogwarts and to the sorting ceremony.
The Sorting Hat was in charge of sorting everyone into their houses. Y/N had heard about the ceremony from her older brothers. Her entire family were Gryffindors, and although she knew there was a very high, almost certain, chance she'd also be a Gryffindor, there was a small voice of doubt in the back of her mind. What would happen if she wasn't sorted into the same house as the rest of her family? Would they be disappointed in her? Would they disown her? Y/N didn't have much time to pity her possible future self, as the sorting ceremony began immediately.
Having a last name at the end of the alphabet meant she had a lot of time to observe her fellow students. She watched as one by one, they faced the sorting hat.
"Malfoy, Draco!" Professor McGonagall called out
Malfoy. Y/N had heard that name before. Her father often spoke about Lucius Malfoy, and was not very fond of him. In fact, their whole family wasn't. She quickly turned her head to the sea of students to spot the owner of the name. A boy with platinum blonde hair came into view, and Y/N watched as he sauntered up to the sorting hat, almost as if he was the guest of honour.
"Malfoy" Ron sneered under his breath so only his sister could hear.
"Dad warned me about him. Best to stay away from anyone with that last name. Anyone can guess what house he's going to be put into. Little snake."
"Ron calm down" Y/N laughed as her brother grew visibly tense. "How can you be intimidated by someone who is that baby-faced?"
"This is serious Y/N! We have to stay away from him."
"Sure Ron, whatever you say" The girl replied absentmindedly, her attention being given to the platinum haired boy at the front of the Hall.
The sorting hat didn't even have to touch his head for it to make a decision and yell "SLYTHERIN!".
"SEE!" Ron half whispered, half yelled to Y/N. "He's trouble!"
Before the girl had time to respond, her name was called by Professor McGonagall
"Weasley, Y/N!"
Y/N walked cautiously up to the front and sat on the stool. As the sorting hat was placed on her head, she looked around the Great Hall, trying to focus on anything but her nerves. As her eyes darted over the other pupils in front of her, they stopped on Draco Malfoy. He was staring straight at her, with a smirk on his face. "Why is he smirking? Do I have something on my face?" Y/N wondered, but she was pulled out of her thoughts as the sorting hat announced "GRYFFINDOR!"
The feast begun shortly after, and Y/N spent the first ten minutes being congratulated by her siblings. She didn't understand why, it's not like she had done anything except sit on a stool, but she accepted the praise nonetheless. Ron, Harry, and Hermione were all also sorted into Gryffindor, and Y/N was happy to already be sitting amongst some familiar faces. Once everyone had finished eating, and the festivities had ended, the first year students rose from the table to make their way to their common rooms and dorms. Y/N was very keen to sleep, and was readily making her way to the end of the Great Hall before she was stopped by someone.
"Y/N, is it?"
The girl turned around to be greeted by a smirking Draco Malfoy.
Before she could respond however, Ron came racing up behind her.
"Stay away from my sister Malfoy."
Ignoring him completely, the platinum haired boy continued speaking.
"I'm Draco, Malfoy"
Ron scoffed at his courteous introduction.
Draco quickly turned his head towards him, his smile turning into a sneer.
"What're you laughing at Weasley? I'm sure your sister's the better sibling."
Before Ron could come up with a remark to throw back at him, Draco turned to Y/N to start speaking again.
"I heard you've got a lot of potential but can't reach it due to being a Weasley, I can help you there" Draco said as he reached his hand out, asking for a handshake.
"A lot of potential? Where did he get that idea from? Did he seriously just insult my family right in front of me?" Thought rushed through Y/N's head faster than she could listen to them. After a few seconds of silence, she made enough sense of the situation to reply.
"Help? From you? After you just dissed my family? I'd rather hex myself, Malfoy"
Draco stood there stunned as Ron, Harry, and Hermione stifled a laugh. Y/N continued her journey to the dorms, feeling more exhausted after her run-in with Draco.
She laid awake in her bed for what felt like hours before she finally got to sleep. The conversation she'd had - if you could even call it a conversation, kept replaying in her head. What did he mean by "you have potential"? Had his father given him some kind of information? Was he just doing it as a big joke to make Y/N look stupid? What would've happened if she had've shaken his hand? Why was he smirking at her during the sorting ceremony?
She didn't like the fact that the boy was taking up so much space in her brain, especially when he'd done nothing to deserve to be there. She hoped this wasn't going to be a regular thing, and that she wouldn't have much to do with him ever again. She was wrong.
