Chapter 14

CHAPTER FOURTEEN 

"Doc, is everything okay?" I asked Doctor Suason as soon as he got out of the room where Monica is sleeping. Hanggang ngayon, hindi ko pa rin matanggal sa isip ko ang image kung saan nakahiga si Monica sa sahig at puro sugat ang palapulsuhan niya.

Just what in the world are her parents doing? Bakit hindi nila mabigyan ng atensyon ang anak nila? She's still their daughter!

"She's fine now. She's dehydrated at mukhang hindi siya kumakain. And based on the cuts on her wrists, it's obvious that there's a lot going on in her life. I suggest to make her see a psychiatrist habang maaga pa. Mahina ang immune system ni Monica, sa totoo lang. Her heart is weak so don't let her cry too much dahil aatakihin siya sa puso and she'll experience difficulty of breathing that may eventually or has a chance to..." His words trailed off. Alam ko naman ang sasabihin niya. If Monica experiences a severe heart attack, it can cause her death. Nagpaalam na 'yung doctor sa amin at pumasok na kami ni Yana sa room ni Monica.

"She looks so peaceful," Yana said as she held Monica's hand. Ngumisi siya nang malungkot.

"She doesn't deserve all this problems. Yes, she deserves to know the truth pero sana naman hindi siya sinisi ni Tito dahil anak siya sa labas. And besides, the blame should be received by either her parents or the third party involve!" I said and rolled my eyes. Hinaplos ko ang buhok ni Monica. Napangiti ako habang tinitignan siya, she looks so peaceful while sleeping. I wish her life was as peaceful as this. She deserves happiness and peace.

She changed for the better and maybe it's because of the pain and her realizations in life. To be honest, I never thought of seeing her like this. Akala ko malakas siya, akala ko wala siyang problemang pinagdadaanan, but god, all this time, she has a weather to storm.

Lumabas si Yana para bumili ng pagkain dahil balak naming mag-stay dito hanggang sa magising si Monica o kaya ay dumating ang parents niya. Kukunin ko na sana ang cellphone ko nang biglang bumukas ang pinto at iniluwal nito si Daddy na mukhang pagod at galit. I immediately texted Yana not to come back dahil nandito si Daddy. I don't want her to take the blame dahil ako ang nagpumilit na mag-stay dito sa hospital kahit na sinabi ni Yana na baka hanapin na ako sa bahay namin. I know Daddy will eventually find me, he has many connections.

"Veronica! I told you! Don't come closer to the Navarros! Ang tigas ng ulo mo!" Sigaw ni Daddy at hinila na ako palabas. Tinignan ko uli si Monica na mahimbing na natutulog. Napapikit ako sa inis at bumuntong-hininga. Nakasalubong pa namin sina Tito Vincent at Tita Estrella pero hindi ko 'to nagawang pansinin sa higpit ng hawak sa'kin ni Daddy.

We drove silently to our house at pagkababa ko roon ay sinabihan ako ni Daddy manatili sa living room dahil mag-uusap kami. Kinakabahan ako nang sobra dahil unang beses niya akong nahuli na hindi sumunod sa utos niya. If my brother is here, he would probably tell me to stay in my room and he'll the one to will talk with Dad, but he isn't here. And by means of "talk", I know they'll end up fighting.

"Elle, how many times do I have to tell you to follow my orders! Napakasimple lang ng inuutos ko sa 'yo! Don't go near the Navarros! I don't want us to be involved in their problem! 'Wag na 'wag ka nang lalapit kay Monica, do you understand!" Dumagundong ang boses ni Daddy sa buong bahay. Hindi ko maiwasanang kabahan at matakot dahil sa lakas ng boses niya. May iilan ding kasambahay na lumabas dahil sila rin ay natatakot.

"D-Dad, Monica's my friend. C-Can I at least visit her at the hospital? Twice a week? She needs me, she needs a friend," I replied. Narinig ko ang pagbuntong-hininga niya at ang pagmumura nang ilang beses. Maybe he's really angry that I disobeyed him but I want him to realize that I didn't do something wrong!

I just wanted to be with Monica during her dark days, is that too much to ask?

"Fine! Twice a week, Veronica. Twice a week," he said and turned his back against me then went to his bedroom. Napayuko nalang ako at tumungo na sa kwarto ko. I'm so tired today, emotionally tired. I really don't know why my father doesn't want me to come near the Navarros, especially Monica. Is it because of their issue? So what? The truth will come out. All of their denials will just be useless once the biological mother or father of Monica comes out.
