032: hesitation kills

"Captain?"

"Y/n?"

I look at him, quite honestly horrified to be in this state. He was panting a bit heavily, hair clearly tussled and blood dripping down the side of his head, tracing along his corner eye. He looked surprised to see me, just as I was shocked to see him.

We were both leaning against the counter, both hiding and shielding ourselves from anyone near. He looked over to the bottle of vodka in my hands, frowning a bit as he refocused his gaze to my eyes.

"You're alive?" he muttered, a hint of exasperation in his voice.

I shot him an offended look, tugging the bottle closer to my hands. "Yes? Why, do you want me dead?"

He immediately resorted to that blank look again, quickly scanning the surrounding before turning to me.

"No. Never." He answered, giving me a solid glare which made me shiver.

"What the fuck are you doing here?" I harshly whispered.

He gave me another glare, shooting me a sharp tsk. "What the fuck do you even mean by that? We were fucking chased and why in the damn are you even drinking at a time like this?"

It was quiet for literally a second, and awkward gap between the two of us, the noises from outside became evident, a clear approaching foe was nearing. Before I could even mutter another answer, the squeak of the main doors that lead inside the bar vibrated.

"Ain't that the damnedest thing! I smell a filthy rat coming from this bar. Come out you little rodent..."

Heavy steps followed by a familiar voice that imitated the sounds of gunshots sounded through the whole establishment, making me tense up. Levi's eyes sneered, pressing himself closer behind the counter as we temporarily met gazes.

"Found ya! The law has come to exterminate the vermin! Bang Bang!"

"Wait, hold up... is that Kenny?" I whispered over to him. Levi's eyes widened at the mention of the name.

I was familiar with the man, at least up to surface level. "How do you know him?" he muttered over.

Looking away, I settled the bottle I was holding on earlier before holding the handles of my gear again, slightly tilting my head while shrugging. "Long story. Happened a few years ago."

He gave me a dubious look, but complied nonetheless. I knew he wasn't going to let this go since he seemed to be connected to Kenny himself, so I knew for a fact that I had some things to explain to him later and I wasn't going to get away with it.

"The hell? Ain't you here?!"

I flinched at the voice. "Right here, Kenny. It's been a while." Levi called.

"Never thought you'd still be alive. What happened to slaughtering the Military Police? Now you're one of them?" Levi probed, looking back.

"Adults do plenty of things a kid like you can't understand." The man answered, making me roll my eyes.

"Like what? Get drunk and pass out? I can bet my ass I can relate to those." I answered out of spite.

There was a moment of silence that passed over, followed by an amused chuckle from the old geezer which made me snort. "So the infamous Ms. Y/n is here too? Ya' reckon I didn't expect to see you team up with this little rodent. You could've taken up my old offer... but a kid like you too can't appreciate things too, right?" Kenny voiced.
