OMNISCIENT POV:

"Nahjourrrr Zayre' Lanier! Hurra' up nah, you canna' be late for court." Granny screamed as she stood at the bottom of the staircase.

"I told this child his court hearing starts at 10:30, he got 3 minutes to get down hea fo' I go up there and wring his neck." Granny huffed as she paced nervous and frustrated.

Tension in the house was at an all time high, and everybody's nerves were bad. Nyny had been in trouble many times before and in some cases got off too easy. But something about this time had everyone feeling like he might not be so lucky.

"Just calm down granny, we got time. I'll go up and get him." Melanie offered pulling her body from the couch and heading upstairs to Nyny's room. She knocked softly, waiting for him to approve her entry.

"Come in Lani" Nyny sighed.

"Nahjour you can't hide out in here. You gotta go, or they gone try to hold you in contempt of court or some shit." Melanie entered his room trying to reason with him.

Nyny sat on his bed, with his head in hands stressing over what today could be and the events that lead up to it. He didn't have a response for Melanie so he kept his silence.

"Ny pick yo head up. Look at me." Melanie spoke softly as she approached him, crouching down in front of him. He lifted his head up to look at her. In his eyes she could read his every emotion.

The pain. The sorrow. The guilt. The disappointment. The worry. The... lost hope from a lifetime of trauma well 16 years worth of it. All those emotions she knew all too well.

"Ny I'm scared too, me and granny feeling the pain of the what-if but all we can do is have faith that this hearing will go in your favor." Melanie told him.

"Yunno I'm turning out just how they said I would... just like my daddy, I was cursed from the beginning. The scariest part about all of this is that this is my destiny, these crackas don't know what a nigga up against out here in the world they just see me as a 2nd generation menace to society. This is a generational curse on me. I'm living this life hoping I can beat the odds and avoid a jail cell or hearse. But I feel like a fuckin disappointment, how could I do this to granny. I honestly don't know what's worse that freedom ain't free or the fact that I don't even know if I wanna be..." Nyny expressed tensely.

"Wanna be what Nahjour? Free? Man cousin we need you out here. I don't think I can function without you. You're not a disappointment! Fuck how them crackas view you, you can write your own destiny. Remember when we was younger, going to Kingdom Kids and they had that career thing. We was only like 5 or 6 but all dem folks came tellin' us we could be anything.."

"Yea I said I was gone be a firefighter and you said you wanted to be a dentist." Nyny smiled small reminiscing.

"Yea a dentist was my second option cause you told me girls couldn't be train conductors." Melanie giggled pushing his shoulder.

"Yunno I only told you that because I was scared that'd mean you be far away and I couldn't see you." Nyny admitted.

"You're so annoying, yunno I'll never leave your side. We evil twins, no matter how far we go we're always connected." Melanie assured him, getting up sitting next to him on the bed. He nodded blankly staring off seeming deep in thought.

"A lot changed for us since back then but who says we still can't have dreams? This ain't the end of the road for you just believe it's more for you out hea." Melanie told him.
