As I entered the room, I looked around for it wasn't what I thought a traditional 'Princess' room looked like when I was younger.. with all baby pink walls and huge paintings of various Duke and Duchesses.. it was relatively normal.
Or as normal for somebody like Margaret as you could get. On the right of the room, there was an elegant dresser with a delicate little jewellery box filled with diamonds, emeralds, sapphires - my brain couldn't comprehend how expensive her Royal Highnesses collection would actually be if it were to all be counted up. To the left of the room, there was an emerald green couch with a matching glass table - very classy and charming just like Margaret herself.
Then we came to the bed. A huge canopy draped across each of the four posters and in the middle, a very small woman. Beautiful - but petite. Her hair was styled in an updo - it was clear that she'd just woken up with curls trickling down her cheeks and down the back of her neck. She looked up at me - with chocolate brown eyes that were so easy to get lost in. However, around me - I noticed all wasn't as positive and as charming as I'd originally hoped. Glass was shattered on the floor which I stepped around as I came closer to her. Countless bottles of Whisky and other sorts of bourbons cluttered up the once neat well-organised desk. I smiled at her 'you wished to see me ma'am' I said politely.
'Ah yes' replied Margaret. She replied in a way - where she knew her status, she knew how important she was and she loved to see how intimidated you were by her where she wanted you to be on the edge of your seat wanting to know more. "Sit" she demanded patting towards the other side of the large bed. I did as I was told and sat at the edge of the bed as she sat up more and looked at me.
"So, as I explained in the letter I sent you - I would like to know what you want to do in the future" She stated. There was silence. I hadn't thought about this - I didn't know where I wanted my life to go or what I wanted to do. "Do tell" she insisted, with a smile spreading across her face. She enjoyed this, seeing how uncomfortable I was at the edge of her bed.
"Well, I haven't really thought that far ahead yet.. I suppose I'd like to keep working at the palace for a few years until-
She immediately cut me off. "How old are you Y/N"
"22, 23 in May" I replied.
"Ah perfect" then before I had the chance to reply, she quickly clapped her hands and at least three of her maids came to her attention. Another thing Margaret enjoyed was having people at her beck and call. "Please bring me and Miss Y/N some iced tea and a glass of water - oh and two paracetamols for me thankyou". I was completely shocked at what was happening. Here I was, sat in Princess Margaret's room. On Princess Margaret's bed. Drinking tea with her. It's what a girl from my background could've dreamed of. That one day, I'd be having tea with the sister of the Queen of England.
Before I knew it, one of the three maids scurried back with two large glasses of iced tea, a pack of rich tea biscuits, a glass of water with a few ice cubes and a pack of paracetamol. "Ah thankyou Jenny" she said with no expression whatsoever. "That'll be all" she smiled and the young girl exited the room.
"So, where were we? - ah discussing your future of course" she laughed. "Have you ever thought about any other roles within the palace Y/N" she asked, intrigued. "I haven't really given it a lot of thought about it, Ma'am-
"Its all right - just call me Margaret for now" she replied. It was the first sense of warmth I'd seen coming from the Princess and the least egocentric thing she'd done since I arrived in her chambers. "How about for me?" She exclaimed. "Pardon" I replied, quite shocked. "Well, as you know Nell, my main Lady in Waiting" has decided to go get pregnant and have a baby" She joked. "So, I'm needing the position to be filled. Preferably by someone I trust" She said, looking directly into my eyes making me loose my train of thought.
"Would it be something you'd be interested in Y/N obviously I understand if your answer is No (she definetly did mind) but I think we would get along just.. splendidly" she smiled."Of course" I blurted out. "I'd love to" I smiled back. Then suddenly, she snapped back to being Margaret at the start when I first came into her beautiful flawed room. "Perfect - you start tomorrow and you will live in the Palace that'll be all as she looked like she was settling down for a further afternoon nap. "Someone will be in touch with you to collect your belongings and explain things further goodbye" "Goodbye" I said as I walked out of the room. 1. I had just had afternoon tea with Princess Margaret 2. I was now her Lady in Waiting and 3. My official residence was Buckingham Palace!
