Kurt had been longing for a moment to step away from Derek all day, and after a long twelve hours of tears, he was finally able to step outside once Derek fell asleep. He looked down at his phone and bit his lip when he read Blaine's message, dialing his number and holding the phone up to his ear. It went to voicemail.
"Blaine, hi, it's me." He said softly into his phone. "I'm so sorry I haven't responded to you, I've been with Derek all day and I couldn't get away until now. I feel awful that I ruined our getaway together, and I promise we'll do it as soon as I get back, okay?" He said, letting out a deep breath. "I'm sure you're sleeping, but, I just wish I could hear your voice." He whispered, biting his lip to hold back tears. "It's weird being this far away from you, and not seeing you everyday. I miss you." He breathed. "Anyways, I, um- I have to get back inside. We're coming home on Wednesday, and I'll try to call you again before then. I miss you, and I'm sorry again, Blaine. I promise to see you soon."
He hung up, letting a few tears fall from his cheeks as he walked back inside and layed in bed.
Blaine blinked his eyes open in the morning, groaning softly. His back was aching from sleeping on the couch, but, he forgot all about that when he saw the voicemail notification from Kurt. He quickly opened his phone, putting it up to his ear. A smile crossed his face the second he heard Kurt's voice, and his heart skipped a beat when Kurt said he still wanted to have their getaway when he got back. Maybe this isn't over.
'I just listened to your message. I miss you too, Kurt. I'll make sure to keep my volume up in case you call again. Talk soon. -B'
He sent the message, rubbing his eyes and letting out a deep breath. He felt guilty for being disappointed that Kurt had to go to Ohio with Derek— of course his dead mother-in-law was gonna come before an affair. He couldn't help, though, wishing that Kurt was beside him again.
He continued his week, keeping his phone on him at all times, hoping for a call from Kurt. It had been three days now, and Kurt was coming back tomorrow. The thought of a phone call seemed hopeless, until Blaine heard a buzzing as he laid in bed, almost asleep.
"Hello?" Blaine breathed, sitting up in bed.
"Blaine, hi." Kurt breathed, smiling slightly as he heard Blaine's voice.
"Hi." Blaine whispered. "Are you okay?"
Kurt let out a deep breath. "Yeah, I'm okay. We went to the funeral yesterday, and we're staying with Derek's dad to keep him company." He said quietly. "I'm in the backyard right now, I was able to sneak away long enough to call you."
Blaine nodded. "I'm glad I was awake this time." He said. "I miss talking to you."
Kurt laughed softly. "I miss it too." He said, running a hand through his hair. "I, um, I needed to call you, though, because I need to tell you something."
"Of course, you can tell me anything, Kurt." He said softly.
Kurt took a deep breath, a long silence between them before he finally spoke. "Derek's dad is having a really hard time without his mom." He began. "He has this huge house all to himself now, and, he doesn't have much other family here." He continued, letting out a shaky breath. "Derek wants us to move here to be closer to him."
Blaine's breath hitched when Kurt told him, and it felt like his whole body was going numb. Kurt couldn't leave, Blaine didn't even have the chance to tell him how he felt yet. He didn't have the chance to show him how much better of a life they could have together. "You're leaving?" He asked quietly.
Kurt's voice was shaky. "I don't know how I'm supposed to tell him no." He whispered. "His mom died, and his dad said we can live with him for free, and he can work at his dad's hardware store. I don't know how to get out of it." He said, sniffling softly.
Blaine shook his head. "Kurt, you- you can't leave. New York is your home, you told me it's always been your dream to live here. You're here, you have a great job, you're successful. You can't let him tear that away from you." He said desparately. "Ohio is so far, Kurt, I would never see you again."
Kurt looked at the ground, biting his lip. "I don't know, I just-" He was cut off when he saw Derek walk outside, and he quickly shoved his phone into his pocket. "Honey? I thought you were sleeping, what are you doing up?"
Derek shook his head. "I woke up and saw you were gone. Who was that?" He asked.
Kurt bit his lip. "It was, uh- it was my dad. He just wanted to know how we were doing."
"At midnight?" Derek asked, confused. "Come on. Come to bed." He said, taking Kurt's hand and pulling him inside.
Blaine could hardly hear what Kurt and Derek were saying, and was cut off by a dial tone soon thereafter. He set his phone down, a million thoughts running through his head. Kurt couldn't leave. He could hardly handle these three days without him, how was he going to be able to go the rest of his life without seeing him? He'd wonder where he was, what he was doing, and if Derek was hurting him. "I can't let that happen." He breathed, grabbing his phone again.
'You're coming back early tomorrow morning, right? Meet me at the office before we open. I have to talk to you. -B'
