In wartime London, Lucy runs in front of a car. The driver honks loudly "Watch it, love".
"I'm sorry," she said.
At a newsstand, Susan stands reading a magazine. A nervous boy stands next to her.
"You go to Saint Finbar's?"
"That's right".
"I go to Hendon House. Across the road". Susan smiles politely but clearly would rather be left alone. "I've seen you, sitting by yourself".
"Yes, well, I prefer to be left alone".
"Me too".
Susan rolls her eyes.
"What's your name?" The boy asks.
With a polite smile, she says, "Phyllis–"
"Susan!" Lucy shouts. "You'd better come quickly".
Susan follows her sister. They run down the street to the tube station. At the station, Lucy drags Susan through a crowd of students gathered on the stairs. They were all watching a fight. Three boys fight against one boy; Peter. Susan locks eyes with her brother and looks at his with disapproval. Two boys pull Peter up and shove him to the wall. Peter tosses one of the boys to the ground but another pushes his head back into the wall.
Edmund pushes into the crowd and past his sisters. He joins the fight. Edmund tackles one boy to the ground who was about to attack Peter. Outnumbered, Peter is kicked to the floor and he falls with his head hanging over the platform edge. Ed jumps on the other two boys to help his brother. Behind the crowd, two wardens blow their whistles and intervene. They grab the boys and pulled them apart.
"Act your age", one of the wardens growled.
The siblings sat on a bench at the platform waiting for their train.
"You're welcome", Ed said.
Peter scoffed, "I had it sorted". He got up and paced.
"What was it this time?" Susan asked.
"He bumped me".
"So you hit him?" Lucy cried.
"No. After he bumped me, he tried to make me apologize. That's when I hit him".
It was Susan's turn to scoff. "Honestly, is it that hard to just walk away?"
"I shouldn't have to. I mean don't you ever get tired of being treated like a kid?"
"Um, we are kids," Edmund chirped.
"Well, I wasn't always", Peter huffs and sits down, "it's been a year. How long does he expect us to wait?"
"I think it's time to accept that we live here. It's no use pretending any different". Susan turns and notices the boy from earlier. "Oh, no. Pretend you're talking to me".
"We are talking to you", Ed says smartly.
Susan rolls her eyes. The train starts to approach.
Suddenly, Lucy yelps and jumps up. "Ow! Something pinched me".
Peter jumped out his seat too; "Stop pulling!"
"I'm not touching you" Ed argued.
"Would all of you just– What is that?" Susan spoke.
The train had arrived at the station. It didn't seem to be slowing down.
"It feels like magic".
