The Honshu wolf (Canis lupus hodophilax) is an extinct subspecies of the gray wolf that was once endemic to the islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in the Japanese archipelago.

Habitat:

Hokkaido wolves lived on the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu primarily in remote mountain areas.

Characteristics:

The Honshu wolf was the world's smallest wolf, standing just over a foot at the shoulder and measuring 35 inches from nose to end of the tail, slightly larger than the Arabian wolf. Their legs were shorter in relation to their body length.

Diet:

Hokkaido wolves feed on deer, wild boar, rabbits and birds.

Status:

Extinct since 1905.
