I walked with Iida to the nearby cafe that I would go to after and before class. We placed our orders, both of us ordering a tea.
Sitting down with our drinks Iida spoke.
"Sumiye, is it ok if I ask you a question?"
"Um, sure." I answer.
"Are you a daughter of the Sumiye's?" He asks.
I looked at him, Crap... He knows..
"Yes..." I answer.
"I knew it, I've never seen you before. You know at any of the company events." He stated.
"Well, I normally didn't socialize with anyone other than my sister at those events. When she stopped going... so did I." I state simply.
"Wait really, your parents were ok with you not attending events? I mean, they are your family, aren't you proud to be their daughter?"
Ouch, that kinda hurt... Of course I was proud to be their daughter. But I had my biological family before I was adopted. I wanted to be a hero since I could comprehend what a hero was. Why they didn't make me go to galas and events... I don't know.
I cleared my throat and looked away.
"I don't really see how that's your business."
Iida's eyes widened. "I apologized, I didn't mean to overstep. I'm just very curious about you and the way you think." He states taking a sip of his tea.
"And the way I think?" I asked, confused.
"Yes... You don't seem to agree with the traditional way to do things."
"And what would the traditional way to do things be?" I smirk taking a sip of my tea. He got a little fluttered.
"Well- um.. You don't seem like you enjoy rules all that much and not to be rude but you do have a bit of an attitude." He is hesitant to state.
I giggle a bit. I know that he was trying so hard not to offend me. He looked at me horrified as I laughed.
"Listen Iida, I understand how hard you are trying now to offend me. That's nice. When I was younger I learned that you can't believe all the rules that you are told, I have a personal belief that we should question rules to make sure that we know what they truly mean for us. I'm not saying to break all the rules, I'm just saying that we shouldn't be controlled" I say, shrugging my shoulders and taking another sip of tea.
Iida was very deep into thought.
"Well I suppose you have a point. We shouldn't follow things blindly. On the other hand, shouldn't we trust authority? Aren't they supposed to have our best interest?"
"Well Yea, they are supposed to, but that doesn't always mean that's the case." I state.
"Interesting, so you don't think adults have our best interest?"
"Some might, and some might not. You have to be careful. I just don't like the idea of being controlled or people thinking that they can control me. I'm not an object, you know." I explain.
"Interesting, I agree. You are not an object, and you shouldn't be treated like one." He states.
I smiled to myself. I guess he isn't as bad as I thought.
"If I may, can I ask a more personal question?" He asks nervously.
"Yes..."
"You don't have to answer if you don't want to, but Why do you want to become a hero?"
Oh-
"I want to help people... That probably sounds very basic haha." I state.
"Not at all, I think it very honorable to want to help people. Is there a deeper meaning to it?" He says chopping his hand in the air.
I laugh a little at his actions, "Well I'm not sure if there is a deeper meaning to it. I just like helping. Being a hero to me isn't about the popularity or the fame that comes with it. The money is nice but it's not needed. I just want to help others, whether that be rescuing, or being a civil servant I'm fine with that. Just being able to protect people is good enough for me." I state. I see Iida staring at me in awe. I let out a nervous laugh. I mean I didn't bring up my biological parents, but I'm not comfortable to take about that with other people yet,
"That's probably really cheesy.." I scratch the back of my neck.
"Not at all, that is so admirable. To be fully selfless for others- that's wonderful." He smiles.
"You know, Tenya Iida, you're not so bad." I smile.
"You thought I was bad?" He asked worried.
"Not bad, more like... annoying." He frowned.
"Well, I thought you were rude." He states.
"Eh, I am rude." I say. This shocks him.
"So you just openly admit things like that?!"
"Um... I mean it's true is it not?" I raise an eyebrow.
"I thought we were talking about us changing our views of one another. I mean why did you think I was annoying?"
"Oh, I just thought that you seemed entitled and you are hella uptight when it comes to rules."
"Entitled?"
"Yea, like because you come from a wealthy and respected family and like your bloodline. I just thought you'd be entitled, but I see that it doesn't seem to be the case anymore." I state.
"To be honest, you have opened my eyes. I mean I've never met someone with such a similar lifestyle but with such a different point of view. I should be more open minded." Iida states.
"I'm glad, the world only gets so much bigger. You should be able to be you and who you want to be. I'm not saying that family isn't important but that it shouldn't be the only thing to define you." I state.
"I agree, but to be honest, I thought that you were going to be difficult with me this whole conversation, but you actually opened up to me." He states.
"Mmm, define difficult." I smile.
This causes Iida to laugh.
After this we talked a little bit about the USJ. Before he walked me to Takeo's car.
"This was nice, Sumiye. Maybe we could do it again one day."
"One day." I tease.
"So, does this mean that we are friends." He asks.
I hesitate, "Friends." I stick my hand out for him to shake. He smiles and shakes my hand.
With that I get into the car and go home. I text Jiro and tell her everything.
