It's been forty-eight hours since Natalie's surgery ended. They said it was normal. Her body was in shock. She needs time to rest. I can't help but wonder if she knew she was pregnant. If she didn't say anything because she was afraid of how I would react.
Cherish: "Morning."
River: "Morning, Cherish."
I haven't left her side since we've been allowed to visit.
Cherish: "You ready to eat?"
River: "Thank you for bringing me food."
They've all been so helpful. Cherish especially. She and Natalie had gotten very close. They loved each other before they were siblings.
Cherish: "Of course. How is she this morning?"
River: "No change. They still say everything is normal; we just have to wait."
I had given them my debit card to get the things they needed. I trust them with my pin. It was easier than going to the atm every time. I know that they've only bought me food and they went to the grocery store. Devon has stayed with them for the last two days.
River: "Something smells good."
Cherish: "I went to the diner. It's the closest place. I wanted it to be hot."
River: "Please tell me you got us biscuits and gravy."
Cherish: "You know I did."
River: "You are my favorite little sister."
Cherish: "Just until Charity comes."
I laugh.
River: "There is no favoritism, and you know it."
Cherish: "Whatever you say."
She says, laughing. She hands me a tray of food.

River: "You remembered."
I always eat fried eggs on top of my biscuits and gravy.
