There is a small crowd consisting completely out of my brother surrounding Sang's doorway when I look down the hallway and I can't resist going over to see what they are all staring at. I mean I expect this sort of behavior from North because he is only one scary love note away from being classified as a stalker - I mean the boy hasn't even introduced himself to the girl yet - but I was surprised to see Kota and Nathan there too.
I walk behind Kota because he is the shortest and look into the room to see Sang's bed is empty. Before the panic of losing her sinks in, I look to the left and see that both Sang and Luke are sleeping together in the other bed.
Luke is sleeping! Holy-baby Jesus.
Not only is he sleeping, but for the first time since Greece he actually looks like he is getting some rest. He is relaxed enough to be quietly snoring as he hugs Sang to his chest. Those two look so freaking cute together that I can't resist taking my phone out and taking a snap shot.
As I look down at the photo, I run my finger over the image of Sang's cheek feeling lighter than I have in years. I know down in my soul that something about this woman is special. We have only known her for five days, yet she is causing drastic changes and desperately needed changes within our family.
Gabriel is alive and breathing.
North is spending so much time watching over her that he is forgetting to drink himself into a stupor every night.
Owen is texting me non-stop asking for updates on the poor girl.
Luke is sleeping.
And me - I haven't had a single cigarette since nearly loosing her in the back of that SUV as we rushed to the hospital. It's like, instead of craving nicotine I crave my next interaction with this incredibly intelligent, kind, loyal beauty that more than half of my family is obsessed with. Every time I interact with her I can literally feel the bubble of happiness that had been absent for so long begin to swell within me again. My shifts feel more manageable again. I am connecting with my patients again. I snap at my brothers less. And I find it easier to get out of bed in the morning.
My musings are interrupted by the most beautiful light and joyful sound in the world. I glance up and see that Sang has tucked her face into Luke's neck and is visible shaking from her giggles. Luke just grips her tighter while giving us a are you serious right now look, and I can't say that I blame him. Waking up to four men staring at you from the doorway must be hella-awkward.
I clear my throat and give myself an out. "Good morning Pookie! I am here to check your vitals and to redress your bandages."
Nathan totally knows that I am talking out of ass and elbows me in the side causing Sang's eyebrows to furrow in dislike. When she turns a not so friendly glare in Nathan's direction I can't help the chuckle that escapes my lips, but I am quick to cover it up. I like the idea of Sang getting defensive on my behalf.
I enter the room and do exactly what I said I was going to do so that I don't look like an idiot and because it means getting closer to my future wife. Kota comes in after me and starts pulling items out of bags at the table in the corner.
"Mmm, that smells wonderful," Sang nearly purrs. "What is that?"
"Pancakes. A very big order of pancakes. North had me bring them by for you and Luke this morning," Kota said and Sang's head snapped in the direction of the door were North was still hovering like some sort of crazy person. A look that I can only describe as a mix of hope and trepidation crossed Sang's face as she looked at my grumpy brother. If that dipshit didn't get his butt in here within the next five seconds I was going to tie him to the extra hospital bed until he started acting like a somewhat more normal person.
