There was a knock on the door and Matt looked up to see Kelly and Shay. He let go of Gabby and kissed her head before getting up and walking out to them.
"Hey guys."
"How you doing Matt?" Shay asked hugging him.
"Holding up as best can be expected I think," he replied.
"How's Gabby?"
"Um, about the same."
"Any news?" Kelly asked.
"Nothing yet. She's still in the NICU, they're hoping to see some improvement in the next couple of hours."
"The whole gang's in the waiting room, we didn't know if you were up to seeing them."
"Yeah, I'll come out." He looked back to make sure Gabby was still sleeping before following them back out into the waiting room where squad 3 and truck 81 were waiting.
"Hey guys," Casey smiled as they stood up.
"How's it going Casey?"
"Alright, still waiting for news."
"From Cindy," Herman said handing him a bunch of flowers and a teddy bear.
"Thanks man, you didn't have to."
"We wanted to."
"And we want you to know that we're thinking about you and Gabby. We'll be waiting for news," Boden said.
"Don't worry, you'll be the first to know."
"We'll let you get back to Gabby. Good luck man."
"Thank you. And thanks for stopping by, it means a lot."
They nodded and all left other than Kelly and Shay.
"When Gabby wakes up she'd probably be happy talking to someone other than me," Matt said looking at Shay.
"We were staying, whether you wanted us to or not," she smiled.
"Come on," he lead them back down the hall to Gabbys room and they walked in quietly. Kelly sat on the chair beside the window next to Shay.
"Mr Casey?" The doctor asked.
"Yes?" He followed the doctor out of the room and closed the door behind him.
"I have some good news for you. Your daughter's improved majorly in the past few hours. We have started getting her off the oxygen pump and we'll see how she reacts from there."
"That is great news," he smiled.
"You're a very lucky man and you've got a very incredible daughter."
"Thank you so much doctor."
She smiled and Matt walked back into the room to see Gabby laying on her side awake holding Shays hand.
"Was that the doctor?" She asked looking up.
"Yeah."
"How's she doing?"
Matt sat down on the bed and Gabby sat up leaning against the pillows. He took her hands gently.
"She's improved. A lot. They're starting to get her off the breathing pump," he smiled.
"Really?" Tears filled her eyes and Matt embraced her.
"She's going to be okay." He whispered to her as she pulled back and wiped her tears.
Shay and Kelly smiled as Gabby leaned back again.
"I want to see her, when will they let us see her?"
"We can go down to the NICU anytime."
"Can we go now?"
He looked over at Shay and Kelly who nodded before standing up and getting the wheelchair from the corner and wheeling it over to the bed. Matt took her hands and Shay helped her up from behind. Once she was in the wheelchair Matt put a blanket over her legs to keep her warm before pushing her out into the corridor. Shay took her hand and smiled.
"Excited?"
"Nervous. I'm not sure what to expect."
"She's going to be beautiful," she smiled squeezing her hand.
Kelly opened the door to the NICU and they walked in seeing the cribs lining the walls of the room.
"Where is she?" Gabby asked looking up to Matt.
"I don't know, I haven't been in here yet."
"Who are you looking for?" A kind nurse asked approaching them.
"Our daughter," Gabby said looking to her.
"What's her name?"
"She doesn't have one yet."
"She'll be under the mothers last name then," she smiled.
"Dawson," Matt said.
"Oh the Dawson baby," the nurse smiled. "She's gorgeous, I was with her just before. You've got a very strong little one on your hands."
Gabby smiled.
"Come on, follow me."
She lead them over to the corner of the room to where their baby was laying in the incubator attached to the breathing machine.
"The doctors have probably already told you they're starting to get her off the machine. Would you like to hold her?"
Gabby nodded slightly and wiped her tears while the nurse gently picked up the baby and laid her in Gabbys shaking arms.
"Just relax. The calmer you are, the calmer she will be," the nurse smiled.
Matt bent down beside her and rubbed the tiny girls head with his thumb.
"What are you going to name her?" Shay asked as her and Kelly watched.
"We never picked a name," she said looking up at Matt.
"What about Liv?"
"Olivia," she smiled slightly looking back down.
"Olivia Louise?"
"Olivia Louise Casey. It's perfect."
