Thump. Thump. Thump. Ugh.
"Swiftie, quit it with the tail bud." Adora moaned sleepily, Swiftwind grumbled a reply back from his place twisted in Adora's legs. Both unwilling to budge from the cozy sleep nest.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
"Swiftieeee." Adora whined, Swiftwind whined back as if mocking his friend.
Thump. Thump. THUMP!
Adora shot up, Swiftwind following as the pair twisting around in confusion. "What in the-?" THUMP! Adora whirled around to face the source of the noise, the window, snatching her pillow to brandish the fluffy thing as if it were a weapon. But the sight she was met with made the girl freeze, slowly lowering her pillow. Outside the window a storm was raging, snow whirling around as winds raged, and the most peculiar part was a cat on the window sill thumping his paw desperately against the glass. A very familiar cat.
"Oh Fang!" Adora lunged forward, throwing open the window a gust of wind blowing her hair back and chilling both herself and Swiftwind to the bone. Fang shot inside, Adora struggled to shut the window behind the puffed up cat due to the level of wind and snow but eventually she managed. Swiftwind was sniffing at Fang's snow covered fur now, curiously twitching his ears, Fang begrudgingly accepting the curious sniffs. "I'm sorry Fang, if I knew it was you I would've let you in quicker." Adora apologized, stretching out a hand to scratch behind his pointed ears. Fang gave a soft purr, shoving his head into Adora's palm, the blonde chuckled. 'Guess all is forgiven.'
"Wait- what're you doing here? Why were you out in the snow? Catra must be worried sick." Adora shot off the questions without thinking, Fang tilted his head and gave a soft meow. Reminding Adora that the feline couldn't respond to her questions. "Oh. Right." Adora groaned, rubbing her fingers against her temple. "Guess I'm still not awake." The girl chuckled, Swiftwind no longer was sniffing at the cat and was instead flopped back onto his spot on the bed. "Guess he's not awake either." Adora mused, flopping back to snatch her phone from its place on her nightstand. It was still early.. 'Was Fang out all night?' As if reading her mind Fang leapt onto her chest, curling up to contently purr against the girl's warm chest. Chuckling Adora absently ran a hand through Fang's slowly drying fur, clicking open her phone to hover over her contacts to send a message to.
Catra.
Adora bit her lip, icey blue eyes glancing down at the purring cat on her chest. "I know she doesn't want to hear from me but.. if it was Swiftie I would want to know." Adora mused out loud, mostly just trying to find a reason to banish the queasy feeling in her stomach. "She can't be mad at me for calling about you right?" Fang gave a soft meow, his eyes lulling shut as if he was preparing to take a nap on Adora's chest. The girl chuckled, pushing down the anxiety in the pit of her stomach and sucking in a slow breath, she hit the call icon next to Catra's name. After a beat of hesitation she pressed the device to her ear. One ring, and then two, and then three.
"I'm sorry, your call cannot be completed, the following number has blocked contact. Goodbye." The line clicked out.
Sucking in a sharp inhale, squeezing her eyes shut to keep her tears at bay. "Of course she blocked my number." Adora groaned, tossing the phone back onto her night stand. Looking down at the sleeping cat on her chest, and her trusted canine curled around her legs snoring once more, she sighed. No point in dealing with it now, she couldn't get up even if she wanted to.
Adora found herself staring at the ceiling, eyes lifelessly dazing out into space as sleep evaded her. She could feel tears stinging at the back of her ice blue eyes, though she had a feeling Catra would have blocked her number but it still hurt to know. "What happened?" Adora whispered to herself, no matter how many times she went over those events in her mind she didn't understand it any more than the time before. All she wanted was to have the girl in her arms again, to breath in her scent, to feel her soft lips against hers again, hell Adora would even take the feeling of her claws again as long as she got to be in Catra's presence once more. A few stray tears began to flush down her cheeks, Fang perked up at this giving a soft sympathetic purr pushing his head against the girl's cheek. Adora chuckled, though a few more tears fell. She couldn't help but feel grateful to see the cat, to have a tie to her childhood friend once more. 'Friend? That didn't sound right..' Fang sucked her from her thoughts with a few licks to her nose, she grinned.
"Catra's lucky to have you." Adora mumbled, wrapping her arms around the small cat to pull him to her chest once more where he happily snuggled up. "I'll get you back to her I promise." Eyes drifting towards the snow covered window she frowned, there was no way they could go anywhere at least today. "Just as soon as this snow is done.." Adora murmured, absently running her hands up and down the cat's spine as she watched the snow storm rage outside.
XxX
Catra mindlessly smashed the buttons on her controller, bicolored eyes trained on the screen as the bodies of her enemies fell. Over her headset she heard swearing as she accidentally landed a hit or two on her own team, they were scolding her, but she couldn't bring herself to care or really even listen. With a few more clicks and a few more fallen bodies Catra was kicked from the online group, apparently the last few were her allies not enemies. With a growl Catra clicked out of online play and into normal game play, it was the fourth time she had been kicked, she was over trying to get along with anyone. Online or in person. 'They all suck anyways.'
Mindlessly returning to killing NPC's this time, she glanced at the top part of Fang's cat tree where the feline usually lounged. Oddly he wasn't there, glancing at his food bowl she noticed it was untouched. 'Weird.' Catra considered pausing the game, but as her eyes returned to the TV she shrugged. Fang could hold a grudge, the same as his human, he probably was down the hall sleeping with Miranda after the mug incident yesterday. The grumpy teen hadn't meant to throw it at Fang, hadn't meant to throw the thing at all, but it just had all happened so fast.
"I'll get him that wet food he likes, that'll fix things." Catra chuckled to herself, though glancing at the window and seeing the snowstorm that had started this morning was still raging, the plan to get wet food at the store would have to be put on hold. "He can sleep with mom for a couple days."
Catra's full attention returned to her game, the sounds of mindless murder and war calming her to her core. Being able to zone out like this, it was so peaceful, it was the first time in weeks that Catra had felt content. Not long into her run in normal game play, or maybe it had been a few hours who knows who cares, a soft knock came at the door. Catra stiffly slipped off her headset, letting it rest on her shoulders and paused the game. "Yeah?" Catra called to whoever was on the other side of the door.
Miranda slipped in, a gentle smile on her lips, Catra relaxed a little. "Hey mom." She murmured, sending a crooked grin back at the woman.
Miranda chuckled, leaning against the frame of the door hand on her hip. "Someone's in a good mood." Catra shrugged, mindless violence was therapy. "So your father's flight is still landing in this storm-" Catra glanced at the window once more and couldn't help the pull of anxiety in her chest, it was bad. "-he promised that they were being safe but I'd rather be safe and get him myself instead of a cab." Miranda seemed to sense her daughter's nervousness, pushing off the door frame to cross the room and gently plop onto the bed. Reaching out a kind hair she ran in through Catra's wild mane, though the teen wouldn't admit she still loved the comforting feeling from her mother she wouldn't stop her. "Do you want to come? I'll probably be gone until late." Catra considered this, glancing from the window to her mother and then to her game.
"Nah I'll be okay, I'll see you guys when you're home." Catra grinned, Miranda returned the smile, though the pair weren't related by blood their smiles seemed to always be spitting images of one another. With one last scratch to Catra's scalp, the scrawny girl letting a soft purr escape her for a split moment, Miranda got to her feet once more and made her way out of the room.
"Okay, I love you, stay out of trouble, nobody over except Scorpia." Catra tensed for a moment as her mother called the goodbye over her shoulder, Scorpia probably wouldn't be over for quite some time..
Shaking the thought from her mind, calling back. "Oh mom wait!" Miranda turned giving a soft noise of acknowledgment, Catra bit her lip. "Did.. Did Fang sleep ok?" The question felt dumb, but the absent pressence of her usually constant companion might be getting to her. Miranda raised a confused brow.
"Fang didn't sleep with me?" Catra's heart sank, if Fang wasn't with her mother where was he?
"Oh, he must've just slipped out this morning and hid under the couch or something." Catra tried to push down her fear, Miranda's confusion deepened but she didn't push.
"Okay love, I'll see you tonight." Catra nodded, smiling at her mother as her bedroom door clicked shut once more. The wild haired girl turned back to her TV, slipping on her headset and considering which button to click on the pause screen.
'Where is Fang? Why didn't he sleep with mom?' The questions weighted on Catra's shoulders, with an annoyed growl she threw her controller down and ripped her headset off once more. There was no way she could go back to gaming without finding her cat now.
Her parent's room was first, maybe her mother just hadn't noticed Fang slip in he was sneaky when he wanted to be. But as Catra crawled under the bed, shifting through the closet, under the dresser, no sign of the feline was found. Catra blinked back tears, panic starting to rise in her throat, flying from the bedroom to the guest room to search the same. Nothing once more. The hall closet, under the stairs, the kitchen, the living room, the laundry room, Catra even dared to stick her head into the freezing empty garage, but no sign of Fang. The lithe girl was starting to panic, running from room to room with hair dark hair bushed out and bicolored eyes wide with terror.
"Fang! FANG!" Catra's voice scratchily cracked, wildly flying up the stairs once more to barge into her bedroom once more to desperately search under her bed and through Fang's cat tree. But all his favorite spots were cold, untouched, unslept in. Snatching her forgotten phone from her bed she desperately scrolled through her contacts to find someone to call, to help her find her beloved cat. Scorpia? No, she couldn't call her after yesterday. Entrapta? No there was nothing the purple haired genius could fix this time. Her mother? She was driving in this crazy storm, she shouldn't distract her mom with a call.
Catra's teeth were sinking into her lip, anxiety raging through her at high speeds. Breathing suddenly felt hard, it felt like she was drowning, and through her terror her heart ached for comfort. For Fang. For a particular blonde to hold her tight once more. Adora.. 'Adora.'
Snatching the phone up once more Catra clicked into her settings and pulled up her blocked contacts, Adora's name shining under her finger. Through her panic her heart screamed for her to hit the unblock button, Adora could help Adora would come to her. Catra clicked out of the contact once more, shoving the phone into her pocket refusing to give into her screaming desires and instead ran to her closet. Desperately searching for a jacket she grabbed the first one she caught sight of, with a startling realization she noticed it was Adora's but she quickly pushed the thought away. The familiar faint scent of Adora washed over her but she had no time to enjoy it, instead throwing it over her head and jamming her feet into her shoes. Finally grabbing her house keys she flew down the stairs and to the front door, throwing it open to be assaulted with a gust of snow. Usually Catra would flinch but her rising panic warmed her plenty, flying out of the house to snap the front door shut and locking it with fumbling hands. The snow was starting to fall so heavily that Catra couldn't see more than a few feet in front of her face, but Catra ran down the street anyways calling out the name of her beloved cat desperately. Praying wherever he was hiding he was safe and warm, and able to hear her desperate cries.A/N: Catra's stubbornness will be the end of her I swear.
