Li Jun grabbed the stack of newspapers on the breakfast table and slid into a chair. He scanned the first newspaper for headlines, searching for small crimes such as stabbing, robbery, assault, manslaughter and etc. There's a reason why he checks the newspaper diligently every morning. That's because our anti-hero uses the newspaper as a daily account for his organized crime activities.
Just as he read about the assault on Sai Yeong street with no witnesses. He was the one who ordered the hit on the victim. That man owed him a lot of money for his failing business and had dodged Li Jun for the second time in a week.
The beating was just a warning, a taste of what's more to come. Next time Li Jun won't be so kind on him.
Reading newspaper has been a part of his everyday routine. Each morning, Li Jun scans the newspapers that Ms. Bing prepared for him.
He sipped on the steaming cup of his fresh brewed coffee and leaned on the back of his chair, flipping to the next page when Shin walked up to the breakfast table.
Shin was dressed in his school uniform, his fine dark hair fashioned sideways. He's a reminiscent of his mother, a daughter of a fisherman in the village Li Jun grew up from. The girl he got pregnant at sixteen. Li Jun felt a sudden pang on his chest remembering his youth and the first girl he'd fallen in love with.
"Shin," Li Jun began, folding the newspapers and placed it back down. His attentiveness pointed at his son who probably rather not have a serious conversation with his father first thing in the morning.
Shin already knew what's in his father's mind. It's always the same subject. Li Jun either wants to discuss higher education or his son's relationships.
He's about to berate him.
"Shin, you know you're just about done with high school. Have you ever thought which college you want to get in?" It took all of Shin's control to keep his eyes from rolling. If he had to hear his father ask one more time, his ears are going to bleed. "We have to make a decision which university is best suited for you."
"I know, father. We talked about this many times before."
