A WEEK PASSED before Luna was allowed to return to school, just in time for the class field trip. The doctors insisted she take the week off, still puzzled by how she emerged unscathed from the accident.

Although she was alone most of the week, Luna found solace in writing during the day and working in the evenings. She even saved up enough to buy a cellphone, a purchase that made her feel a little more connected to the world she felt increasingly distant from. Yet, the guitar she longed for would have to wait—much like the life she left behind.

Bella, of course, wouldn't stop asking questions. How did they survive? What exactly happened? Luna could only play dumb, deflecting with half-truths and shrugs. How could she explain something she didn't fully understand herself? She knew only that Edward's supernatural strength and her own mysterious abilities had saved them. The idea that she might not be entirely human was a thought she wasn't ready to confront.

Returning to school was a mixed blessing. On the one hand, she missed her friends. On the other, she dreaded the biology field trip. What did the facility expect? All of them to go "Woo Hoo Science"?

The thought of spending the day pretending to be fascinated by compost tea was bad enough, but knowing Edward would be there made it worse. She didn't want to face him, to be reminded of how close they had come to disaster, how much he seemed to know about her that she didn't. But secondly, she had to suck it up because it was a grade.

Luna clutched her bag, taking a deep breath as she and Bella stepped out of the truck. Mr. Molina was already collecting permission slips, his voice a dull buzz in the background. Her eyes scanned the crowd, landing on the familiar faces of the Cullens. And there he was—Edward. Their eyes met, and for a moment, it was as if the world narrowed to just the two of them. The memory of the accident flashed in her mind, and she quickly looked away, her heart pounding.

She didn't want to think about what had happened or what it might mean. But something about Edward pulled at her, a connection she couldn't deny or explain. Whenever they were close, she felt like she could say or do anything, as if the world itself bent to their will. But that was a dangerous feeling, one she knew she should stay away from.

Still, she couldn't stop wondering—did he remember what happened? Did he know what she had done, even though she didn't? The thought of what Edward was—what she might be—haunted her, no matter how hard she tried to push it away.

Lost in her thoughts, she barely noticed Mike approaching. "Did you miss me, Mikey?" the girl teased, throwing peace signs.

Even though Mike was still annoying, Luna had grown fond of him. She found him endearing even though he was sometimes a little too much to handle. But with a few "Chill, Mike" comments here and there, he mellowed out a bit.
