◟ ✦ "This is only the beginning, you'll see." ❞AS PLANNED, Edward picked Luna up around three o'clock the next day and started the drive to the Cullen residence to meet his family.
Luna slid into the passenger seat, laying her head on the armrest, and absently turned on the radio. The soft strumming of the music filled the car, an attempt to soothe her anxiety. She hummed along, her eyes tracing the familiar scenery outside, but her thoughts were elsewhere—on what lay ahead. The Cullen house wasn't far, just twenty or thirty minutes, but the distance felt like a chasm. Most of the drive was from the central town roads, which made sense. It was out of the public eye, most likely to keep wondering souls from discovering the family's true nature.
"So, I finally got the lip gloss off my cheek," Edward broke the silence, glancing at her with a smirk. He couldn't forget the soft, sticky sensation of her plump lips against his cheek. Especially when she immediately zoomed into her house, not even allowing him to process it.
The curly-headed girl's heart skipped a beat as she covered her flustered face, the scene clear in her mind. Look, I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me—" she began to spiral, her voice catching as she recalled the scene with vivid clarity. But Edward's hand reached out, his touch grounding her.
"Hey, calm down, we'll talk about it later." He soothed. "But, for now, it's time to face my family."
"Great." Luna breathed as they pulled up in front of the Cullen house.
Edward moved swiftly, opening her door before she could fully take in the sight before her. He took her hand, guiding her inside as if sensing her hesitation, and opened the door for her again, her head gazing toward the roof.
"Wow," Luna whispered, her voice barely above a breath as she took in the modern, open design of the home. "This is incredible." Edward smiled softly at her amazed expression before lightly taking her jacket off. Luna whispered a thank you. It was beautiful, but there was something almost otherworldly about it, a perfection that made her feel mesmerized. "It's so modern yet open and lively. It's amazing."
Edward smiled softly at her, but it was tinged with an edge of anxiety. "What did you expect? Coffins and dungeons and moats?" He chuckled as he led her toward the stairs, their hands connecting again.
"No, not the moat, at least," She forced a laugh.
"Not the moats." He repeated, him only being able to shake his head at her.
As they ascended the stairs, Luna followed behind, soaking up every aspect of her environment. Suddenly, she heard music, assumingely opera, coming from somewhere in the house. She looked at Edward, who sighed, looking embarrassed. "I told them not to do this." He said to her.
