◟ ✦ You are my life now. ❞

AS SOON AS EDWARD GOT WORD FROM CARLISLE, he moved with inhuman speed, practically shoving Luna into the idling jeep. The world around her felt like it was spinning as she tried to keep up, her head throbbing with a headache that wouldn't relent. She winced, clutching her temples, but before she could catch her breath, Edward was already fumbling with the seatbelt before Luna snapped at him, telling him she was okay. It was more to convince herself than him, her voice trembling as she pushed his hands away.

Edward didn't reply, his movements stiff and jerky as he shot over to the front seat. Luna watched him with growing unease—his knuckles were white as they gripped the steering wheel, his jaw clenched so tight she feared it might crack. His entire body trembled with barely contained rage, his eyes shut for a moment as he forced himself to take shallow, ragged breaths. The silence between them stretched, thick and suffocating.

"Is he coming after me?" Luna's voice was barely a whisper, heavy with dread.

But Edward didn't answer. Instead, he ignited the engine and the car roared to life. Without a word, he drove off, the jeep lurching violently as he took sharp turns and careened over obstacles.

"Listen to me," he finally spoke, his voice tight with controlled fury. "James is a tracker. The hunt is his obsession. I read his mind—my reaction on the field set him off." His words hung in the air like a death sentence.

Luna felt a cold chill settle in her chest, her hands trembling as she gripped the seat. "Why does he want me so badly? If blood is blood, why would he track me?"

"I don't know," Edward admitted, his tone laced with frustration. "But your blood—it's different. When I read his mind, he said he'd never smelled blood like yours. Using your powers made you a target, Luna. Maybe he thinks he can take them from you."

"Take my power?" The idea was terrifying, almost incomprehensible.

Edward's expression darkened further. "We've just made this his most exciting game ever. He's never going to stop." His voice broke on the last word, the weight of the situation crashing down on both of them.

He swore to always protect her ever since they confessed to each other, but he might have bitten off more than he could chew. His inclination clouded his judgment, and it was too late. Luna was an unforeseen storm, and the moment James saw that she wasn't exactly human put a target on her back.

Luna's heart plummeted. The reality of what they were facing hit her like a ton of bricks—this wasn't just a fight for survival; it was a battle that could end in death. And Edward knew it too.
