◟ ✦ "Who's he?"
"That's Edward Cullen." ❞"THERE'S NO WAY YOU DON'T KNOW THEM. They are legends," Bella expressed as the bell rang and started packing her things.
"Well, let's just say I'm more of an indie kinda gal," Luna replied with a playful grin, hoping Bella would drop the subject. She couldn't reveal that her music taste was more than a decade out of date—it was one of those secrets she wasn't ready to share. But she liked the way Bella's eyes lit up when she talked about something she loved.
The initial awkwardness between them had started to melt away, leaving room for genuine conversation. The silence that had once felt suffocating was now comfortably filled with banter. It was a small but significant victory.
"Yeah, but you must have heard them on the radio," Bella pressed, her curiosity unwavering as they walked side by side to their next class.
"Maybe," Luna deflected, glancing down at her schedule. "Hey, what's our next class again?"
"Ugh, gym. Otherwise known as my death sentence," Bella groaned, and Luna couldn't help but smile at the dramatic flair in her voice. It was refreshing to be around someone who could make her laugh so easily.
"I used to hate gym at my old school too. Well, not all the time," Luna admitted as they headed toward the crowded locker room. She hesitated, then added, "There was one sport I was okay at."
"Lucky you. I'm terrible at anything that requires hand-eye coordination," Bella said with a laugh, though there was a touch of self-consciousness in her tone that Luna noticed.
"Well, I wasn't exactly a star player," Luna confessed as she changed into her gym clothes. "But I was on the volleyball team. It was fun, but... it wasn't really my choice."
"How come?" Bella asked, her voice softening as she sensed there was more to the story.
Luna hesitated again, then sighed, tying her hair back. "My adviser back home thought it would be a good idea after... my mom died." The words came out quieter than she intended, but Bella caught them.
"I'm sorry," Bella said, her voice full of genuine sympathy. She didn't press for more, and Luna appreciated that. It felt like they were stepping into deeper waters, past the small talk and into something real.
"It's fine," Luna shrugged, though she could still feel the tightness in her throat. "It was years ago."
They reached the gym, where the other students were gathered near the bleachers, waiting for the teacher. Luna gave Bella a small smile, a silent offering of solidarity. "Well, I guess I won't be embarrassing myself that much today," she said, nodding toward the volleyball nets set up across the gym.
