IT'S ALWAYS SILENT BEFORE THE STORM, and as the days passed the pit feeling in Luna Knight's stomach sunk deeper. She buried herself in work, desperate to keep her mind from spiraling, but the gnawing dread was relentless. She wanted to talk to him, needed to, but after the disaster on her birthday, they hadn't spoken in days–and it showed.

Bella noticed first. The Cullens had vanished from school since Luna's birthday, and she watched helplessly as the light drained from her best friend's eyes. The others in their friend group noticed too; Luna was too chatty, her jokes too sharp, as if she was trying to fend off something looming just beyond her reach. Everyone knew better than to ask if it was relationship trouble—there was no need. The change in Luna was obvious, and the reason was glaring.

Luna sighed as she turned off her car, the weight of everything pressing down on her. She missed the days when she and Bella would cruise around in Bella's old truck, but lately, Bella had insisted Luna drive alone. She claimed it was to help Luna get more comfortable behind the wheel... or maybe it was because Bella was scared that Luna was in the driver's seat.

As she stepped out and walked toward the house, her heart stuttered. Standing near the Swan residence, bathed in the twilight, was Edward. The sight of him, usually so familiar, now filled her with dread. His expression was distant, unreadable, and the absence of a greeting or a kiss was like a slap in the face.

"You're here," she managed to say, her voice a mix of relief and anxiety.

Edward's reply was devoid of warmth, his voice flat. "Walk with me?"

He didn't wait for her response, just took her hand, his touch like ice against her skin. A chill ran through her, and her mind screamed at her that something was terribly wrong. But this was what she had wanted, wasn't it? A chance to talk, to clear the air. So why did every step feel like it was leading her to something she wasn't ready to face?

They walked in silence, the woods closing in around them like a cage. Luna's breath hitched as he stopped by a fallen tree, releasing her hand as if it burned him. He turned to her, his face as cold as his voice.

"We have to leave Forks," he said, his gaze fixed on the ground.

"Why?" Luna's voice trembled, her pulse quickening.

"Carlisle's supposed to be ten years older than he looks. People are starting to notice."

She shook her head, trying to make sense of his words. "That's not it, is it? When?"
