IT WASN'T LONG AFTER LUNA AND JACOB ARRIVED AT SAM'S HOUSE. Luna's legs burned with every step as she and Jacob made their way to Sam's house. She cursed herself for not insisting they drive, her car abandoned on the side of the road. But the ache in her calves was a welcome distraction from the anxiety gnawing at her stomach. But once they set foot in front of the house, Luna realized it didn't work.
As they approached the house, the warmth of the woodsy home struck her—a stark contrast to the Cullen's sleek, modern abode. But despite their differences, Luna felt a strange fondness for both.
"I like his house," she admitted softly, the calm settling over her nerves, if only slightly.
Jacob nodded but hesitated before reaching the door. "Also, about Emily—Sam's fiancée—try not to stare. It bugs Sam."
Luna furrowed her brow. "Why would I stare?" she whispered, more to herself than to Jacob. Anxiety, perhaps? She knew how unsettling being stared at could be—how it used to irritate Edward, too.
Pushing the thought aside, Luna followed Jacob into the house. The air was thick with chatter, laughter, and the kind of warmth that only comes from a close-knit group. Her heart pounded as they passed through the living room and into a large dining area, where the pack gathered around a long table.
"Hey, Jake!" Embry's voice boomed as he embraced Jacob, his eyes brightening when he saw Luna. "Luna, hey!" he greeted, sweeping her into a bear hug.
"Luna, long time no see!" Quil's voice echoed as Luna found herself lifted off the ground.
"If you don't let me down, it's you who won't see the light of day," she threatened, though her tone was playful. Quil laughed, setting her back on the ground. She smiled at the two younger boys before ruffling their heads. "Nice to see you too."
As introductions were made, Luna's head spun, trying to keep track of the names and faces. Despite the initial nerves, the pack's warmth was contagious. She could feel their curiosity, though they tried to hide it behind welcoming smiles. Despite their attempts to be discrete, she overheard some of them gossiping about what they saw on the field.
The mouthwatering aroma of freshly baked goods drifted from the kitchen, momentarily distracting Luna from the probing stares. It was a stark contrast to the icy tension she felt inside, a reminder of the warmth and normalcy she craved. "It smells great in here," she commented, her stomach rumbling.
A young woman with satiny copper skin and long, straight, crow-black hair walked out of the kitchen, a smirk gracing her face as she saw Luna. "Why, thank you," she said, wrapping Luna in a warm hug. There was something maternal about her embrace, reminding Luna of her mother. "I'm Emily, Sam's fiancée."
