IT'D BEEN DAYS since Luna had seen Jacob. The silence of her unanswered calls to the Black residence felt like a personal void, swallowing any hope she had clung to. The feeling of abandonment gnawed at her, driving her to escape the suffocating stillness of her home.
As she neared the clearing, a bittersweet vision of her and Edward lying together in a sunlit meadow flickered in her mind. The memory was a painful contrast to the scene before her. The once-vibrant meadow was now a cold, lifeless wasteland, the flowers and warmth gone, replaced by a chilling emptiness. The overcast sky mirrored her desolation.
A wave of déjà vu crashed over her, but as she took in the desolate field, her heart sank. The meadow, once her sanctuary, had become a symbol of her own decay. Her powers, once a source of pride, now corroded her very existence. She felt a crushing weight, both physical and emotional, dragging her to the ground. The darkness seeping from her body seemed to pulse with her despair.
"No, no! Not again," she choked out, her voice trembling with helplessness. The darkness that had begun to retreat lingered, and the searing pain in her chest became an unbearable reminder of her failure. Tears blurred her vision as she stared at the ruined field. The place that once brought her solace was now a mirror to her own unraveling. Her body seemed to betray her, leading her back to this graveyard of her hopes and dreams.
Suddenly, a rustling noise shattered her misery. Luna's head jerked toward the sound, her heartbeat accelerating as she frantically scanned the surrounding woods. The rustling came again from another direction, heightening her sense of dread. Her fear turned to horror when she saw him.
"Luna." The dark-skinned nomad's voice was a chilling, mechanical greeting.
"Laurent," she spat out, the name sour in her mouth. Memories of his past encounter and the peril he represented surged back, but his unexpected appearance only heightened her terror.
Laurent's predatory gaze settled on her as he closed the distance with unnerving speed. "I didn't expect to find you here," he said, his eyes lingering on the decayed landscape. "I went to visit the Cullens, but their house is empty. I'm surprised they left you behind. Weren't you sort of... a pet of theirs?"
Luna's rage flared at his callous words. "I am no one's pet," she snapped, the hurt in her voice betraying her vulnerability. "Why are you here?"
Laurent's gaze turned colder. "I came as a favor to Victoria. You knew she'd come for you eventually, didn't you?" His eyes narrowed, and Luna felt a shiver run down her spine. "It's almost as if you were expecting it."
Her legs trembled as she grasped her palm tightly, realizing she was trapped. "I... I knew she would come eventually," she stammered. Her heartbreak had clouded her awareness of the danger.
"She asked me to see if you were still under the protection of the Cullens," Laurent explained. "Victoria feels it's only fair to kill Edward's mate, given he killed hers. An eye for an eye."
Luna scoffed. "It's rather obvious that James tried to kill me. Not just because of blood lust, but because he believed some ridiculous lie about taking my powers. He kidnapped my friend to lure me there and tried to record my death to torture Edward because he got in his way." Luna glared. "The only reason I'm alive is that Edward protected me and if you kill me now, both of you will join James."
Laurent's eyes narrowed, studying the decayed landscape around him. It's already begun, he thought. "I don't think he will. After all, how much could you mean to him if he left you here unprotected?"
His words stabbed into the delicate, false armor she put on as despair washed over her face. He didn't care about her enough to stay. You're not good for me. He left her... for dead.
The nomad sighed, almost wistfully. "Victoria won't be pleased about my killing you," he said, taking a step closer. "But I can't resist. You are quite... mouthwatering."
Fear surged through Luna as Laurent approached with lethal intent. She tried to call upon her powers, but a sharp, agonizing pain shot through her arm, making her gasp. Her hand clutched her wrist tightly, fighting back a scream.
Laurent's eyes widened before softening with a twisted sense of pity. "Don't be afraid," he whispered, his voice a chilling caress. "I'm doing you a kindness," he said, his voice a chilling whisper. "Victoria plans on killing you slowly. Painfully. Whereas, I will make it quick. I promise. You will feel nothing."
Tears streamed down Luna's face as she faced her impending doom. Her thoughts raced with fear for Bella, Charlie, and her friends. Without her powers, she felt utterly helpless and abandoned.
"Before you do it, can I ask for one last wish?" Her voice cracked with desperation.
Laurent hesitated, his impatience growing. "What is it?" He could care less about how she died or what she wanted, but at last, she would be dead by his hands.
"What did you mean by I wish not to disturb the natural powers that night?" Luna's whisper was barely audible, her fear mingled with an urgent need for answers.
Laurent chuckled darkly. "You still don't know, do you?" He shook his head, mocking her ignorance. "The Cullens didn't tell you? I thought you were close."
Luna's eyes burned with a fierce intensity. "Tell me what?"
Laurent's expression grew more resolute. "I figure it won't matter much longer." Laurent noticed the rage in her expression and the slight glowing of her eyes. He quickly prepared himself again. "After all, It's better to kill the seed before it festers."
Before Laurent could strike, an invisible force hurled him across the field. Luna cried out in agony as the pain in her arm intensified. Laurent recovered quickly, but the sound of snapping branches and low growls made him pause. "I don't believe it," he whispered shakingly as he paced backward.
Luna's head turned slowly toward the source of the noise, her eyes widening in terror. A massive black wolf emerged from the forest, its teeth bared and eyes locked on Laurent.
The wolf advanced, followed by others, as Luna tried to crawl away, her arm still burning with pain. The leader of the pack snarled a warning, and Laurent hesitated, glancing at Luna before fleeing. He used his strength to strike the black wolf, but the wolf quickly recovered and lunged at him.
The pack attacked Laurent with ferocious intensity. Luna's vision blurred as she witnessed the brutal struggle. Her ears rang with the cacophony of growls and screams. Exhausted and overwhelmed, her knees buckled, and the last thing she saw before darkness engulfed her was the savage battle unfolding before her eyes.
