a surprise pounding on the door
it’s the evening, some would say night,
still, dark, late, December
clearly cold in street clothes
I recognise the troublesome leader under a bundle of hoods
this choir recites unenthusiastically:
“we wish you a merry Christmas”
thrice, finishes with:
“and a happy new year”
In the same breath and monotone lead asks:
“got any money?”
with an honest:
“no sorry”
my door closes on my first and probably last carollers of the year
I wonder who lacked Christmas spirit most here?
