"Hi there, little one," Brett whispered, tears flowing down his face as his oldest son was gently placed by the nurse on his chest. He still had all the tubes stuck in him, and he moved his little hands as it was a new situation he had never experienced in his few weeks outside the womb. "It's baba. And gosh, you're so small."
"He's as big as we'd expect a small full term baby to be now," the kind nurse said with a smile, shifting some of the tubes so they wouldn't get an awkward bend. "And once his lungs develope fully, he'll be off the tubes and can come home with you."
"We'll have to wait for Aiden anyway," Brett mumbled softly, sniffling softly as he ran a finger carefully over Benjamin's cheek. He couldn't believe he was actually holding him, and he wished Eddy was there too. "Will it be okay for Eddy to hold him tomorrow?"
"It really depends on how busy it is, but if it's not too busy, a nurse can come help out with that," the nurse said softly, making sure everything was good before just watching them for a bit. "Just grab a nurse and ask, yeah?"
"Okay, thank you," Brett mumbled, just letting Benjamin sleep on his chest. That's most of what the twins did anyway.
"Want me to take a picture if you two?" the nurse offered, nodding to Brett's phone on the table next to him. "To send to daddy?"
"Yes please. Thank you," Brett smiled, looking to the table. "Just take my phone, I'm too scared to move."
...
"You wanna listen to some music before we go nighty?" Eddy asked Elise as they had curled up in his and Brett's bed. They had both put on their nightwear and snuggled up under the blanket they had found in a box as the duvet was somewhere Eddy didn't know about.
"Yea! 'Bussy!" Elise grinned, followed by a big yawn. "'Bussy!"
"Alright alright, Debussy it is," Eddy chuckled, finding Clair de lune on his phone to play for them. "It's a good nighty piece."
"Yea," Elise nodded, having curled up next to Eddy on the bed. "Nighty piece."
Eddy put his phone between them after pressing play, screen down and notifications off so it wouldn't light up the room or interrupt the music.
"Okay, close your eyes and listen to the music, then," Eddy said softly, and felt proud at his little girl when she actually did.
Only the light from the one lamp on his nightstand was illuminating the room, making everything soft as the first few notes of the piano piece sounded from his phone's speaker. He swore he could see her smile a little, and it warmed his heart that she could appreciate this music before she could even talk properly.
"I love you, babygirl," Eddy whispered, not wanting to disturb the peaceful moment, but also wanting her to know how he felt in this moment.
"Love you too, dada," she whispered back, yawning again. It only took a few moments after that for her slow breathing to be replaced by soft snores.
