•Third-Person POV•
The Deputy had the half-alive John Seed on his muscular, broad shoulder. Rookie threw the Baptist as hard as he could to the ground; the youngest Seed brother collided against the rocky, dirt road with a huge thud as he gasped for air. John's lungs felt heavy as if they were lead. The rocks dug into his back, threatening to break through the fabric of his extremely expensive signature trench coat decorated with planes. Mud and bits of blood were caked on John's cheeks as his ocean blue eyes glared up at the Deputy with such abhorrence...
In an instant, Corey grabbed the youngest Seed brother's key around his neck and lifted him up off the ground; the string holding the bunker key around the Baptists' neck was restricting his airways, making it even harder to breathe for John. John then grabbed the Deputy's wrist, lifting himself up slightly to allow more oxygen in and to not let Corey take the key just yet.
The Baptist struggled to breathe as his voice sounded hoarse, "What if Joseph is right? Did you ever stop to think about that?" John questioned as Corey's gaze hardened. "Everyone thinks he's crazy, but he's not. Look around you." The youngest Seed brother scanned the perimeter, secretly hoping his lover, Rory, would show up, but he knew better; she was with his brother, Jacob... Safe and protected with the eldest Seed brother in his bunker, residing in the Whitetail Mountains awaiting the Collapse Joseph prophesied. John then stared back up into the Deputy's eyes once again. "This world is on the brink. You can feel it in your bones. Look at the headlines. Look at who is in charge!" John shouted, his voice straining before he started coughing hysterically as his breathing rapidly deteriorated.
"You're insane. I don't know why Rory would want to be with you. We were perfect until you came along." The Deputy hissed at the youngest Seed brother; he was jealous... extremely envious of the lawyer. Rory was once his, but now she is not... "The world is not ending, John. You and your family are such nut-jobs."
"You want this key because you think you're saving people, but they are already safe. We had a plan." John shook his head in disappointment. "You don't understand. You don't believe. You don't care!" The Baptist screamed at the Deputy with such rage...
Rookie immediately jerked John's bunker key from around his neck as he gripped it in his hand as if his life depended on it, but the lawyer still didn't let go of his wrist.
John's breathing quickly became more and more labored as his grip loosened tremendously, "May God have mercy on your soul." The Baptist choked out, coughing a couple more times before he let go of the Deputy's brawny wrist, plummeting to the ground once more... John was experiencing very severe bilateral pneumothoraces as his lungs and his breathing became worse by the second. The plane crash really took a toll on his body and if he didn't receive medical attention soon, it would be fatal.
But Rook didn't leave just yet as he towered over John's half-dead body. Corey glowered at the youngest Seed brother and spat on his face, his saliva cascading down John's cheek, mixing with the dried blood and mud.
Immediately, a close, loud gunshot permeated the air.
The Deputy quickly turned around and unholstered his .44 Magnum, raising the weapon in the direction of the gunshot in self defense. Rory now stood ten feet away in front of him, aiming her Glock right at Rookie's head.
