Wesley drove Brandon, Jason, John, and I to Faith's bunker where there were qualified doctors that could help the Baptist.
"Drive Wesley!" I shouted at the cultist while John laid half-alive in my arms.
"Ma'am, I'm trying."
"Step on it! Faster, faster!"
—Seven Hours Later—
I paced outside of John's room. He is undergoing a procedure right now where the surgeon has to insert a chest tube between his ribs to remove the excess air because his pneumothoraces was so severe that they couldn't heal on their own. I was freaking out because he could die; he had two collapsed lungs for fuck's sake!
"Rory, you need to sit down." Jacob's gruff voice stated, trying to convince me to sit down beside him. "It ain't gonna do you no damn good."
I sighed, nodding my head in agreement as I complied. "I'm just worried about him."
"We all are, child." Joseph attempted to console me. "But God has everything under control."
And that was the first time I'd ever prayed... I'm not a believer... but I still prayed in that damn hallway anyway... I prayed that if the man upstairs really was there, if he genuinely was real, for Him to heal John and then I'd probably start believing in Him. I prayed for happiness as well. I prayed that my parents wouldn't abandon me for being with John. I prayed for a myriad of things... I don't know if I could live without John even though we haven't been together very long. But it seems like I've known him and been with him forever.
Faith rubbed my back in a comforting way while I had my eyes closed. My eyes shot open as I jumped, flinching away from her. She immediately retracted her hand as guilt filled her eyes. The young woman looked as if she was about to cry.
"Oh, I'm sorry." Faith apologized, looking sorrowful. "I was just trying to comfort you."
"It's fine. I should be the one that's sorry." I giggled a little bit, trying to lighten up the mood.
Wesley, Brandon, and Jason were standing in the hallway as well, waiting patiently for the news on John. It's been about seven hours since we made it here. The surgery started around five hours ago and the chest tube procedure began about an hour ago. The doctors could come out in the hallway any second now.
"Please, hurry the fuck up." I huffed in annoyance, becoming incredibly irritated and restless.
"You are so goddamn impatient." Jacob chuckled as he kicked his legs out, crossing them at the ankles and placing his hands behind his head, he was all sprawled out in his chair while leaning up against the wall. He sure looked comfortable.
"Impatient is my middle name." I smirked at the eldest Seed brother while the Father looked at us, disappointedly, shaking his head.
Not long after that, one of the main surgeons busted out of the room with a clipboard in his hands, staring down intently at it.
Quickly, I stood up and made my way to the man. I read his name-tag and it read:
Dr. Levi J. Burnes (Surgeon)
Specializes in:
Thoracic SurgeryI raised my eyebrow, "How the hell's he doing, doc?" I questioned, more like demanded.
The surgeon tore his eyes away from the clipboard, staring down at me. "Alive."
"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked, feeling fretful.
He sighed, "John had a Bullectomy done. It's a surgical procedure where bullae are removed; bullae are sac-like areas that are around a centimeter in diameter and they're filled with air which has had the oxygen used up. It's really common in tall, thin men like John. And his plane crash sped up the process. Anyway, by taking out the bullae, it lets healthy air sacs more room to expand and enhances breathing and intake of oxygen. After the surgery, we put a chest drain in place; it's to avert fluid and air buildup between the membranes after the procedure."
"Is there bad news?" I questioned.
"Any surgery has risks because of the general anesthesia. We woke John up just now and he'll stay in his room until he's ready to come home. Specially trained nurses will look after him and they'll make sure he's in no pain at all and that he's breathing fine. John will be given oxygen until he recovers and can breathe on his own."
"Does he have to keep the chest drain in?"
"Until it's no longer required." He muttered, looking back down at his clipboard, scribbling down something with his pen. "John is allowed to have visitors. Come. I know you want to see him."
