Corey and I walked up the steps to my house as my dad stomped out the front door with some luggage.
"Come on, Kim. We're leaving." Dad demanded as he didn't pay any attention to the two of us while he went back inside.
"No. No. This is our home." Mom replied sternly as dad came out with some more luggage.
"C'mon Kim, you just don't understand—" Dad shook his head before ushering Corey and I inside.
"Don't understand what? That they're stealing our land and kidnapping our friends, as well as our daughter, and doing God knows what else?" Mom snapped as Nick handed Corey a suitcase, but she took it from him.
"Kim..." Dad sighed as he carried two more suitcases outside on the porch and came back inside to retrieve some more.
"Nick. Your grandfather," Mom pointed at dad's chest, "built this place. You really want to turn your back on that? And what about all the times you talked about handing off the business to the both of our daughters?"
"I talked about handing off the business to Rory and our unborn son." Dad responded obstinately.
I rolled my eyes; he's totally a Rye: stubborn as a fucking mule. "Dad, it's going to be a girl. Get over it."
"Yeah..." Mom agreed with me, "You've seen the ultrasound, Nick. It's a girl."
"Rory, Kim, that was on a messy black and white TV screen. You know them things ain't reliable." Nick argued, throwing his hands up in the air.
"Nick..." Mom huffed at dad's unsurprising comeback.
Dad stepped closer to mom and gently rubbed her pregnant belly very soothingly, "I love you."
"Me too." Mom smiled up at dad as he let go of her.
"Well, Deputy. Looks like the Rye family's digging in." Dad informed Corey as he went out on the porch to retrieve the luggage.
Corey went out to help him.
"Hey listen. If you need any air support, you gimme a holler." Dad told Dep as they both carried the suitcases back inside. "You and me will be like Butch and Sundance."
"Nick... they both died at the end." Mom chuckled at dad as he put all the luggage on the ground.
"Nah." Dad replied, glancing back at her as I rolled my eyes with a small smile.
Mom walked up to Rook and held his hand, "Please take care of him and our daughter."
"I promise." Corey responded with a grin on his face. "I'll see you later, Rory." He nodded at me as he let released mom's hands and walked out of the door.
"You young lady, have a lot of explainin' to do." My dad stated as he turned towards me. "Rory... are you with John?" He questioned.
I pondered for a moment, contemplating on my answer, "... No."
"You better goddamn not be." Mom chimed in, her arms crossed over her chest, staring at me.
"I'm fucking not." I sighed with a roll of my eyes. "Even if I was, I'm eighteen anyway."
"As long as Kim and I are still breathin', you do what we say, Rory." My dad strictly asserted. "And... is that JOHN'S COAT YOU HAVE ON?! WHAT THE FUCK?!" Nick eyed the coat I had on suspiciously.
"No, dad. Stop making assumptions. You know what they say about assuming... Makes an ass out of you and me. I'm tired and I need some sleep. I'm heading upstairs to my room."
"Goodnight baby." Mom called out as I headed up the stairs, trying to avoid this ridiculous conversation.
"Sleep good!" Dad yelled from downstairs as I entered my room and shut the door.
Sighing, I took John's coat off and gently placed it on my bed. Quickly, I changed into some pajamas and brushed my teeth. After getting ready for sleep, I made my way to my bed. I picked John's trench coat up and took a whiff of it. God, it smelled exactly like him, making me want to cry.
Did I do the right thing?
