Joseph was the first to walk in John's room, holding the door open for all of us.
"Thank you, Joseph." I thanked the Father as I slowly walked into the operating room.
John was awake, laying down on a hospital bed with tubes all connected to him with a drain pump beside his bed on the table. He looked pallid with dark circles under his eyes as if he hasn't slept in days, his cheekbones looked a little sunk in as well...
"His nurse is giving him high calorie drinks to supplement his meals. In some cases, it's necessary." Dr. Burnes informed us as a nurse opened up a bottle of strawberry ensure plus, some kind of nutrition shake for John. "It's to help his body heal and regain his strength back to normal so, of course, he's going to need calories from his diet. Those nutrition shakes really help. More than you realize... It is very, very common after a surgery to lose appetite, but ninety-nine point nine percent of the time, patients find that consuming little and often is best."
"Don't you guys have chocolate nutrition drinks?" John asked as he raised up. "Strawberry is trash... Horrendous." The Baptist huffed like a little kid.
"No, sir. We only have strawberry and vanilla. I can go get you a vanilla shake if you'd like." The blonde nurse offered with a smile plastered on her face, showing her extremely white, perfect teeth; her lipstick was an incredibly vivid red.
I was jealous of how beautiful and breathtaking she was.
"Vanilla is too plain. Yuck! It'd be so much better if you guys had chocolate." John complained. "This is insane." He grunted in annoyance with a roll of his eyes. [JOHN IS SUCH A DRAMA QUEEN💅🏼👑
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH🥰]One thing's for sure, he never lost his adorable smartass mouth...
"You seem like your usual sarcastic self." I chuckled as I stepped closer to John's bed.
He quickly craned his neck to look at me. "Rory?"
I grinned at the Baptist, "That's me."
"Come here, darling." He ordered, ushering me over with his hand.
I bent over and gave him a quick hug before I sat down in one of the chairs beside his bed. "You need to drink the ensure, John."
"It's strawberry." John replied, not looking very amused. At all.
"You're such a baby." Jacob crossed his arms, shaking his head at John. "Just drink the damn drink. You need to regain your strength."
"It's supposed to help your body heal, brother." Joseph explained as he sat down in the other chair beside me. "Dr. Burnes knows best, John."
"Just drink the goddamn shake." Jacob gruffly demanded from the corner of the room, his arms still crossed as he leaned against the wall.
"Yeah, the doctor said that the nutrition shake is to supplement your meals." Faith added as she stood at the foot of John's bed, beaming at the Baptist; she somehow seemed to always have such an angelic smile on her face. "I can give you some Bliss for the pain if your medicine isn't working."
"... Fine." John sighed as he took the strawberry shake from the nurse, taking a sip of it. "God, this is awful. How do people drink this stuff? And yeah, Faith, I'll want some Bliss later."
Faith nodded.
"When am I going to get to come home?" John questioned, gazing up at Dr. Burnes. "Doc?"
"You can be discharged when I see that you are recovering well, sir. We'll have to remove your chest drain first." The surgeon replied, glancing back down at his clipboard. "But... if you are making pretty good progress, you can be discharged as early as next week, although your chest drain may need to stay in. We'll have to see your progress first. I can attach a chest drain that is safe and easy for you to use at home. Then, Ms. Rhiannon here or me, can teach you and give you some instructions on how to use one. After a while, we can set up an appointment to see Rhiannon after you return home. She's really good; Rhiannon is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Thoracic Surgery. Oh, and make sure that when you get home, have someone to be there with you at all times. And right before you become discharged, we'll supply you with medicine or Bliss, your choice, a discharge advice booklet and contact details, and another appointment for a checkup... Also, exercise is extremely salient for your recovery, John. Since you've had lung surgery, you need to work extra hard to help your lungs re-expand and recover from this procedure, sir. Exercise is key. It will be difficult at first because you'll feel breathless and exhausted, but I can assure you, that it'll become easier gradually as you recover. And every day, no matter what, between 12pm and 2pm, you must rest. You'll recover quicker. And get at least eight hours of sleep per night... I hope I didn't forget anything."
"Dr. Burnes, when we get home, is there any like... symptoms or... some kind of signs to watch out for?" I asked the surgeon.
For some odd reason, John smiled wide at that, which left me a little confused.
"That's what I forgot!" Levi laughed. "... Okay. If you have an increase in the amount of pain you have, despite the Bliss or the painkillers you're taking, any part of your wound comes apart, your wound becomes redder, swollen, warm to the touch, or leaking fluid, and if it's becoming harder to breathe where it becomes serious, you contact me. And if you have any signs of constipation despite your suggested high fiber diet and daily laxative, don't panic. We can always fix that with a digital rectal exam, so no worries about that."
The Baptist blushed a light shade of fuchsia.
"Aw, you're blushing." I pointed at his cheeks, trying to hold back a giggle.
"Shut it, Rory." John playfully snapped at me. "Let the doctor finish."
I clenched my eyes shut, attempting to contain my laughter; a few seconds passed and I couldn't control myself as I busted out laughing. "That's what she said." I was fucking hysterical.
My joke was like an elephant in the room as there was dead silence...
Suddenly, the oldest Seed brother snickered at my joke.
"At least some fuckin' body gets my humor!" I chuckled as I scanned the room. "Doc, I'm sorry. I really am. You may proceed."
