Chapter 10:
Lux POV:
As the two of us walked across the small campus to get to the office, I watched as fear captivate every students face as they saw me.
Purple eyes, I guess I can't blame them...
I didn't dare breathe, completely screwing off my 'how to be a human' lessons and held onto Carter's shirt like a scared little girl.
"How are you feeling?" Carter murmured to me and I shook my head.
"Wear more cologne tomorrow." I said and he laughed.
"Whatever helps, babe." Carter said and I held onto him tighter.
It was true, his cologne really did drown out the tempting smell around me. It was a deep foresty smell, and it smelled almost as amazing as the fresh blood walking down the hallway.
Soon we were in the office, and I pulled away from Carter, yet holding his hand. I was too scared to let go.
"Hello sweetie, what can I- OH... Um..." The secretary said startled at my eyes. I smiled sheepily and cautiously let go of Carter's hand.
I walked up to the desk and quietly laid my hands on the surface, playing with a pen from a clipboard.
"Hello, my name is Lux Cullen, and I'm here to pick up my schedule." I said softly, trying not to scare the lady or myself. I let out a small breath and caught a whiff of her scent.
NOT my taste.
The small woman readjusted her foggy glasses, and nodded, smiling. She seemed to relax at my words, and I was confused.
"Ahhh you're a Cullen." The secretary said with a warm smile, rummaging through some paper files.
"I am." I said proudly, thinking of my new 'adopted' family. So brave, so kind...
"Well you have a lovely family Miss Cullen, you take care." She said, handing me my schedule. I smiled, taking the paper and tucking it in my purse.
"I will, you too." I said and walked out of the office with Carter right on my tail. I pulled him to the side of the hallway, and raised one eyebrow.
"Cullen's have a reputation." I said more as a statement than a question. Carter chuckled.
"You have no idea. Everyone either thinks their freaks or the most polite group of kids they've ever seen. And of course the most beautiful..." Carter said and I blushed.
I tried to ignore the urgency inside of me to spring on a certain girl walking by, who pulled up her hair in a messy bun, revealing her neck.
"Your cute." I said, flicking his nose. He cringed under my finger adorably. Then he grabbed my hand and took my schedule from my hands in a light, swift motion.
"Let's get to class."
&&&&&&&
I had realized by 2nd period, English, that I could make people do almost anything I wanted. Humans are very distracted and easily dazed...
"Mrs. Hugh?" I asked, and the tall woman with chocolate hair looked up at me beaming like I had won an Olympic medal.
I look deep into her eyes and smile, my gaze not lifting, and I could see my teacher stare at me in wonder.
"Do you think I could run to the counseling office quick? I have a question about my schedule..." I said, smiling, the dazzling effect glistening in my eyes.
Mrs. Hugh smiled at me with big eyes. I smirked, and tried to stifle a laugh.
"Mrs. Hugh?" I said concerned and she snapped out of it, flushing red. I giggled only loud enough for a vampire to hear.
"Oh of course! I'm sorry I just, um, spaced out..." Mrs. Hugh apologized and I laughed, instantly comforting her.
"Thanks." I said and swooped out of the classroom before she could stutter out a simple 'no problem'.
I was getting better at this. I could tame the thirst for the blood the way I could when I had Jasper and Alice to coach me through it.
I stepped out into the small hallway and sighed, finally breathing again, before an absolute mouth watering smell caught my attention.
I felt my eyes blacken, and my senses throw into overpower. Turning on my heel, I shot down the hallway after the warm cinnamon scent, not thinking twice.
There she was, quietly standing alone in the empty lab room, lights turned off, door closed behind her. I peered at my prey through the small section of glass on the side of the closed lab room door.
She was pretty, with short blonde hair that brushed her shoulders with ease. She was long and skinny, a pale complexion making up her figure.
I took another full inhalation of her scent, my senses snapping.
Then the girl reached up for a glass beaker on the tallest shelf. I could see a crack in the surface, her finger SO close to clipping over it,
With a yelp, the girl snatched her hand back, starting to ooze with blood.
This is too easy.
But then the motion of her hand retreating, the beaker tumbled to the ground, shattering where her feet once were. The girl gasped, and tried to pick up the pieces with her bloody hand.
With the smell of blood coaxing me to kill her, I began open the door.
She looked up at me in curiosity, holding her hand against her chest.
I smiled.
Right where I wanted her.
