Chapter 38

Mike’s POV

He sat in front of a blazing fire on New Year’s Eve. It was late in the evening and the guys were going to be over any minute. They were going to have a little New Year’s Party. He sighed softly as he stared into the flames. He wished he could do this year over. Everything he’d done was wrong. Everything. Guilt washed over him. He wasn’t a good husband. All he’d done was beaten man he loved and brushed him aside. He locked him up in jail for a month, slept with another man, threatened to kill him and yet, Chester continued to come back and accept his apology. For some reason, Chester returned to his side after everything he’d done. He couldn’t ask for a better man to be married to. Chester was so loyal and maybe that was a bad thing.

“Mike? Why are you crying?” Chester’s soft voice broke his thoughts. Mike glanced up at him. He hadn’t even realized that he was crying. Chester sat down next to him and hugged him.

“H-Hey Ch-Ches,” he said softly. Chester cuddled up to him and kissed him lightly.

          “What’s wrong?”

“Have you ever thought that you’d be better without me?” Mike asked quietly. Chester looked at him with sadness in his deep brown eyes.

“Oh Mikey….don’t tell me you’re doubting this again,” Chester said as he reached his hand up to Mike’s face. Mike leaned into Chester’s touch.

“I just……I was just thinking about this year…..and…..I mean…I’d totally understand if you left me,” Mike said, “I understand. I just want you to be safe.”

“And I feel safe with you. I couldn’t be without you. Don’t you see that I can’t live without you? Ever since I was seventeen, I’ve never felt safer in someone else’s arms. Ever since I was seventeen, I’ve never loved someone so much. Ever since I was seventeen, you’ve been my light in the darkness. Mikey, believe me when I say that I love you more than anyone in the entire world. You keep me safe and I couldn’t imagine being away from you.”

Mike smiled down at Chester’s little form against his body. His glasses were a little crooked. Chester snuggled up against him and nuzzled his face into his chest.

“And anyways, who would keep away all my nightmares?” Chester whispered. Mike laughed softly and rubbed Chester’s back.

“You don’t need me for that,” Mike said quietly.

“I do. You know how I get when you’re not around. I can’t sleep alone.”

Mike looked down and saw Chester holding his teddy bear in his hand. He looked like such a little boy. Like an eight-year old kid.

“You’re still carrying that?” Mike asked with a smile. Chester grinned at him and held the bear to his chest.
