"She didn't know what had changed. She only knew that something had."

Katherine opened her eyes to darkness.
For several seconds, she had absolutely no idea where she was.
It was morning.
At least, she assumed it was morning.
There was enough pale light slipping beneath the heavy curtains to suggest that the sun was already up, but nobody had bothered to open the drapes.
Her first attempt at moving was a mistake.
The moment she shifted one leg beneath the duvet, a dull throb travelled straight through her head.
Katherine winced.
"Oh, God."
Her mouth was horribly dry, her tongue sticking unpleasantly against the roof of her mouth. She swallowed and immediately regretted it, her stomach turning with a slow, miserable lurch.
She pulled the duvet over her head.
Perhaps if she stayed perfectly still, the world would stop.
It didn't.
Her hand moved instinctively across the mattress.
She expected to find Fred.
Instead, her fingertips met cold sheets.
Katherine frowned.
She moved her hand farther across the empty space.
Nothing.
Her eyes opened again.
Fred's side of the bed was completely empty.
His pillow was gone too.
For a moment, she simply stared.
He'll be at the shop.
She thought.
Then she frowned.
It was Sunday.
The shop wasn't open on Sundays.
Restocking.
She decided.
That made more sense.
Except deliveries didn't arrive until Monday morning.
Katherine pushed herself upright, immediately regretting that decision as her head began pounding harder.
She sat there for several seconds, one hand pressed against her forehead.
Why wasn't Fred here?
She looked around the room.
The room looked enormous without him.
That was ridiculous.
It was exactly the same room it had been the night before, but without Fred occupying his side of the bed, somehow it felt unfamiliar.
She leaned over the edge of the mattress to check whether his pillow had somehow fallen onto the floor.
Nothing.
Her stomach twisted again.
Katherine pulled the duvet tightly around herself.
She hated this.
She hated the uncertainty.
She hated how quickly her mind could turn one tiny unexplained detail into something enormous.
