Chapter 5
Picture of Olivia.
“This is unbelievable,” William says, astonished, after a moment of silent.
He came home shortly after the detective and her team left. I told him about the encounter restlessly, and he just stood there listening to me intensely.
“I know it is. Moreover, I can’t believe Keith just agreed to the fact that he drew that picture by watching it on the TV!” I exclaim feeling frustrated.
“Calm down Rachelle. He probably was afraid to admit the truth,” Olivia says softly.
“What’s there to be afraid of?!” I say, getting more angry as time passes.
“Hey, hey, take it easy,” William says walking towards me, as he pulls me in a hug and tries to cool me down but I didn’t know how to cool down without so many things happening around without any trace left behind.
“M-mom?” I hear Keith’s shaky voice call out.
I snap my head towards his direction only to find him peeping his head from behind the wall. His eyes were red as if he was crying for long, and his knees were shaking. Olivia quickly walks towards him and help him get inside the room while I pull away from William. Olivia makes Keith sit on the sofa and William sits beside him, with Olivia on Keith’s other side. I cross my arms across my chest and stand my feet, looking away from Keith. I know I’m acting like a bitch who had a fight with another girl and others were trying to sort out things, but I couldn’t help but act like this. I was angry. Why did he lie?
“Hey son, what’s up?” William says calmly, rubbing his hand on Keith’s back.
I look at Keith and wait for him to speak, or tell the real reason of coming inside the room. He looks at me sadly, and all I wanted to do is run to him and say it was fine, but I won’t because I’m that stubborn. C’mon, he is just a kid, the voice in my head said but I wasn’t fighting it. I needed to act tough to get the truth out of him.
“I-I’m s-sorry mom,” Keith says weakly.
“Why did you lie to the detective?” I ask distressingly.
“I-I didn’t. I was… was answering to her p-previous question,” he says looking at me with his sad eyes.
“Which first question?” Olivia asks him, looking at him intently.
“W-when she asked me a-about t-the …. drawing,” he stammers out.
“You mean you really saw that scene in the backyard?” Olivia asks again.
“Y-yes,” Keith says breathlessly. “I just, replied when she asked her next question.”
“So couldn’t you correct her when she thought you were telling that you saw the picture in the television and drew it?” I ask frowning.
“Rachelle,” says strictly, giving me an alarming look. I sigh.
“Dear, please tell us what happened,” William says pulling Keith on his lap.
“Why am I always left alone?” Sara’s innocent voice says as she stands by the door of the living room, holding her teddy bear.
