THALIA MERELY stared at Peter as he sat down next to the lake, watching as he picked grass and strung them apart. She didn't know why he had asked her here; she always forgot about him, as much as she hated to say it. Thalia always thought of herself as perceptive, seeing things in other people that they wouldn't think of themselves.
Yet, little Peter Pettigrew slipped under her radar. It never made sense to her as to why he hung out with The Marauders, it was like they never paid any attention to him either. It was quite sad, actually. Even she had a friend who knew where she was and never wanted to let her out of her sight.
"Spit it out, Pettigrew," she told him. Thalia crossed her arms across her chest as she saw him stiffen. Peter slowly turned his head towards her and sighed, leaning back on his arms. He watched over the grounds, thinking about what to say to her as they both sat there in silence.
"Why do you hate us?"
Thalia stared down at the boy, watching as his eyes moved across the horizon. She didn't know why he cared so much. They were all practically worshipped at Hogwarts, with all of their pranks and boisterous attitudes. It wasn't hard to take a liking to them, but that meant that it wasn't hard to hate them, either.
"Because you have no regards for the other people that surround you."
Peter stopped for a second, his gaze lingering on a patch of grass not far from him. He was surprised at how blunt Thalia was even though she answered his question. Because you have no regards for the other people that surround you. There was a sort of poetic feeling to her words, one that left Peter wondering what they meant and how he should respond.
"What do you mean by that?" He asked, not daring to look at the girl.
Thalia kept her gaze on his sandy blond hair, watching as it rustled slightly with the wind. His cheeks were tinged pink and the sun was reflecting in his eyes, merely staring at a patch of grass.
"I mean exactly what I said. You hold no empathy for the people that surround you," she told him. Only then did Peter finally look up at the girl. His hair fell back and his eyes met her own; dark and stormy, holding a hatred that he had only seen in Sirius' eyes when his family was brought up. Yet, he didn't think they had done anything wrong, surely not as bad as what the Black family did to Sirius.
"Don't act coy with me, Pettigrew," Thalia said, "none of you know the consequences of your actions."
"And yet, we spend almost every Saturday in detention," he responded.
"A measly detention. You get to clean while everyone else gets to sit and wonder why a group of boys targeted them. Why were they the victim. A year of embarrassment is worth a lot more then a detention with your favorite teacher. Being the victim is never a choice, Peter. So don't make it seem like one."
Thalia gave the boy one final look before she walked away, her robes swishing against her calves as she walked back to the castle. She was surprisingly calm for just talking to a Marauder. She didn't feel angry, or revolted, if anything she felt better. It felt nice to get that off of her chest, to finally tell them that their pedestal would soon fall.
She had seen it before, when she was younger. The prettiest people, the most likable people, are the ones who fall the hardest. Their beauty won't belong to them anymore, their humor would soon fizzle out, and all they're left with is a memory. A memory that it would all be better. A simple memory, that could all but be forgotten.
Her jaw clenched as she walked through the halls of Hogwarts, past the students and the paintings, past the flames on the walls. She didn't notice any of it, not like she usually did, at least. But that's when she knew that they were going to be her downfall. Thalia had realized this a little too late. Her hatred was like another form of worship. She watched and she waited, she pondered and she thought. Every waking moment, ever fiber of her body shook at the sight of four measly boys. She hated it.
"Tal!"
Thalia looked up from her spot on the floor and noticed Caroline Sampson waving from the Ravenclaw table, her bracelets jingling on her wrist. Thalia smiled at the sight of the blonde girl, her mood lightening as she walked over to her.
"Hello, Cara!" She greeted, taking a seat next to her. The Great Hall was filled with chatter as the children filtered in, waiting to see what was on the menu. Thalia relished the warmth it all gave her; the candles giving a warm glow to the hall, the chatter filling the room in lovely flows, even the colors of the tables gave the room a new sense of life.
"How was your day?" Caroline asked, looking over at her friend.
Thalia shrugged and leaned onto the table, placing her cheek on her hand. "Ah, I'd say pretty eventful," she told her.
"I saw you in DADA today. You and Remus were amazing!" She smiled. Thalia tried her best to put on a fake smile as she talked to Caroline, not wanting to let her mood dampen at the sound of a name.
"Thank you, Cara," she said.
Dumbledore clapped at the head of the room, standing at his podium as he looked over at the students. Thalia's head turned towards the older man, watching as his robes swished against the floor. It looked like the stars on them glowed, reflecting off of the candles in the room. Thalia wondered what enchantment it was before her thoughts were interrupted by the resumed chatter of students.
She looked up and saw the arrangement of food lined up along the table, smiling at the sight of it. She immediately began filing her plate up, not realizing how hungry she had actually been until that moment.
Her gaze went up for a moment, staring at the spot that the Marauders normally sat at. But, they weren't there. She frowned for a second before her gaze went up and down the Gryffindor table, spotting their two friends Lily Evans and Marlene McKinnon.
She realized that they had never showed up to dinner.
